Default $1650 RGB Laser... what do you think

Well I have been playing with lasers since I built my first laser at 14 years old (.5mW HeNe... built the psu myself too, was a shocking expierence hehe )

and have been playing with laser shows since then also... I have finally decided to put together a decent system with 3 colors and saw this on ebay...

it looks like a good deal but the lasers seem kind of... weak... i dunno, I really cant afford to blow that much on this since I have to buy galvo's too so it seems like a good deal...

    opinions?

Axis is indeed a "real" seller. Several people have purchased lasers from them. Search around on the board to get more details about those sales. (I can't personally speak for how reliable they are as I've never dealt with them, but I've heard both good and bad about them.)

Search e-bay for "rgb" and "laser" and you'll find lots of systems like that one for sale. Many with scanners and amps included. (some even include DAC's!) Just be sure that you're comparing apples to apples... Check the scanner speed - lots of the units only come with 15kpps scanners. Also - be sure to check the blanking speed of the lasers. If they only support TTL blanking at 10Khz, then it's going to look funny if you hook up a set of 40kpps scanners and try to get pinpoint color accuracy!

As for the specific system you linked to - it's not a bad price for the components included... when you figure in the labor to mount and align everything I suppose it's a fair price. Mind you, you could probably build it yourself for a good bit less - but if you want a turn-key solution it would do... (Don't forget the cost of the galvos, amps, power supply, and a DAC...)

well, I am going to get some fast galvo's (~30kpps) and the DAC I am getting from another source so I am just looking for lasers right now...

do you really think I could save that much making it myself? I dont know where I could find the opics/trichro or any of that jazz...

I found this one also. Looks very interesting. Comes with a trichro already installed too. If only I had the money

Remember the future?, That'd today, as you imagined it yesterday.

    Hmmmm,

Not the best value for money.. I think for that sort of money, you could buy better components, with greater power and analogue mod. Also, the fact that the optics are all glued in position isnt the best solution..

As for color mixing, a couple of dicros on fine adjustable mounts are going to be so much easier to align than a tricro

Hello folks, I just found this web site, and I think it is great! Tons of great things to read. I use to always go to alt.lasers, but it just seems dead there. Anyway, I saw this on ebay and thought it was a descent price for a turn key system, my only concern was the 40mW of 473nm. Seems a bit on the low end to me. The balance of the 180mW of red and 50mW of green would make for a nice yellow. But just 50mW of green with the 40mW of blue, seems like the green would completely wash out the blue. I emailed the seller to see if they made a unit with 100mW of 473nm. Thier responce was they dont, however may in the future, and that the current configuration made for a nice balanced white light. Am I wrong here? 40mW of blue does not balance with 50mW of green....

    David
