    Default Canadian laser show regulations

    Hey folks,
Does anyone have any experience doing shows in Canada?
Trying to find some solid info on the regulations and process to gain approval.
I emailed the radiation protection office in Canada but the response may or may not come back.
Any info would be appreciated if you happen to know.
    Thanks!
    -Andrew

I dabble in Canada too a bit...

All laser emitting devices must comply with the Radiation Emitting Device Act. in order to be sold or brought into Canada. The onus is on the manufacturer/importer to comply with the RED Act and regulations. Below are links to laws and regulations.

For the time being, a demonstration laser such as a laser pointer or handheld laser that emits more than 5mW (above class 3R) is not allowed and currently under investigation.
The limit for a laser pointer or handheld laser of acceptable safety level for public use is a Class 3R laser with a limit of 5mW of optical power.

REQUIREMENTS REGARDING LASER EQUIPMENT SOLD IN CANADA
    Legal requirement
Laser equipment sold in Canada must comply with the Radiation Emitting Devices (RED) Act (text available at http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/R-1/index.html) Section 4 indicates specifications regarding the sale, lease and importation of radiation emitting devices into Canada. The onus is on the manufacturer/importer of the product to comply with the RED Act.

    Engineering requirements
The full Regulations text can be found at http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/R-1/C.R...370/index.html. Parts VII and VIII of Schedule II are obsolete and will be replaced by Proposed Laser Regulations that will apply to all applications based on accessible beam characteristics similar to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements or the European International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Laser Standard. Although, for the time being, there are no specific Canadian laser regulations for your application, it is recommended that manufacturers/importers comply with one of the following standards to ensure compliance with the RED Act and any future proposed regulations:
    i) IEC 60825-1 Ed. 2.0 (2007) "Safety of laser products - Part 1: Equipment classification and requirements" available at http://webstore.iec.ch/webstore/webs...1?openDocument

ii) FDA 21CFR1040.10 (2007) "Performance Standards for laser products" accessible at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/script...cfm?FR=1040.10 , as well as harmonization "Laser Notice No. 50" accessible at http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/De.../ucm094361.htm

    FOR LASER LIGHT SHOW PROMOTERS
In case someone decide to prepare a laser light show outdoor, they need to fill the “Notice of proposal to conduct outdoor laser operations” that can be found on Transport Canada’s website:
