Always remember
LD need Current regulated no Voltage.
And a 317 configured to current Reg. works great (just a resistor across ADJ and output) and for the value, just 1.25/current
But also calculate power for it![]()

Then again, I just ran into this nice driver....
All depends what are you gone to do
Just for test or CW OK, but for modulation you need a driver,
here on PL, search for Stan_Ham diode driver for the tread. This has all the info and diagrams you need for DIY a nice one.
Well the red was a FAIL!!
Got a sled, got the red laser out of it.
Inside the old laser was a open can style laser diode. That was mounted in a brass mount. That screwed into the front heatsink/lens. So the new diode was bigger then the original. Took the press, and made the hole bigger. Got the new DVD diode to fit nice, and got it all wired up.
Yes we have light........ But it is only a laser spot light! No matter how far or close the focus lens is..... Bummer.... Sure glad it was a free DVD rw drive... Would have been sad to spend lots on a diode and fail like this.
Oh that open can story, I now well
They are very sensitive to static, so ground your self and be very gently extracting it,
also dust is you enemy and back light reflections adjusting focus.
So when adj. focus do it with less power.
And may be, some DVD in the shop the laser is bad, so keep trying
BTW start at no more than 200mA, not all can handle more than 380mA. the good ones 400mA but I don't go more than 380 for long life.
You can also buy a red and blu-ray diodes cheap; probably cheaper than trying to harvest them yourself... although if they are free, have fun playing.
