my PLL driver board has been etched, pierced and populated today

saturday is the day when I'll test the beast

    full bridge of G27N120BN with a 900 turns 0.3mm primary (60mm diameter)

psu is a 30V 15A transformer with a full wave voltage quadrupler made out of 4 4700µF 100V capacitors, and 5500µF 200V filter capacitor

I'll make some tests with a 2A variac this weekend and if it behaves right, I'll crank the 10A variac

next one will be a DRSSTC with a secondary former of 100cm height, 10cm diameter...

already tried a simple SSTC with single switch @ 24VDC and had some 1" streamers

I never got into the OLTCs or DRSSTCs. I think the prices of IGBTs and other such components have put it enough out of range for me. They are fascinating as hell, but I like to kick it old school style!

The one thing I love about SGTCs is the fact that, aside from the magnet wire, the whole coil was built using junk and hardware store materials!

Please post pics of your work!

    Question

My Harley Sportster doesn't count does it? That is as dangerous as I get with my toys.

My home built Jacobs Ladder using LM555 oscillator and automotive ignition coil, filmed with laser for street cred.

    Default My Toys!

I've got a Jacobs Ladder as well. Mine uses a 10,000 volt oil furnace ignitor transformer. Very easy to build. Attach the rigid wire to the secondary output and bend to the right angle then attach a plug to the primary. Done.

The rest isn't really high voltage as much as high temperature. The first picture is a prototype I built called a Dragon's Breath that I built it when I worked at a special effects shop. It uses a standard BBQ grill propane tank to shoot a flame in the air about 6' around and 10' high. It has a high voltage spark ignitor to light the pilot then a thermocouple monitors to make sure the pilot stays lit. When the blue button is pressed the main valve opens to release the full pressure from the tank. I usually get it out for the 4th of July celibration. The neighbors all get a kick out of it.

The rest of the pictures are of the finished products. There were 6 Dragons Breath and 2 water cannons that shot water 60' in the air throught the fire. You can see the water in the last picture. It was taken after the install was finished at dusk. The finished product was all computer controlled and synced to an audio track. Quite an expense for a Put-Put course if you ask me, but they paid us.
