I would say that 638 hasn't made 642 obsolete, its just a 'bit' better. IMHO, the 638 is the same colour as my LW 642's to my eye and they could well be the same given the wavelength variation possible in the diodes.

Mine is also a 6 diode head so the beam is chunky (at the aperture) to say the least. But on a laser that size, the aperture is usually a long, long way from anyone viewing it so that point is largely irrelevant (IMO) if it's still got good specs at 50 metres.

The thing I think we've all got a little used to is that ONE wavelength got cheap - stupid cheap - and so we all start feeling everything else is expensive in comparison, but really it's always been expensive, we've just had a little gift for a bit.

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

mine does not, I get two very much separate dots that get further apart the further I project

Why on earth would an optical engineer use a steel bolt in a brass mount ?
Brass expands ~40% more than steel does.

Probably to avoid stripping or locking the threads.
Temp should be constant anyway once warm up period is complete but I must admit that stainless would have been more elegant.

    Cheers
