I bought a 532nm from china a couple weeks ago without issue

just make sure they don't include a power supply, should help your case that its an OEM device

got my $60.00 638nm 500mw diode. Not powered it up yet but I am hopeful that it will be something to use for beams if nothing else.

Where did you acquire a ML501P73 for $60 may I ask? The 300 mW mitsu diodes are $65 ..

nope your right. PS: just put power to the laser diode. Damn bright at 400ma. Will never work for graphics. Not so sure about beams either. It appears to be about as bright as 4 642nm diodes at 300ma or about 600mw of 642nm. It would be the fix if it could be tamed. 2 of those and you done.
