    Default Need Computer Help - Monitor

    Hey guys-

    I suddenly have a multi-colored plaid pattern on my computer monitor. The internet is connected, because my son can play XBOX live with no problems with connection or graphics.

    However, I cannot work on the computer at all.

    Any ideas? Suggestions? It would greatly appreciated. I knew this was the place to ask....

    If you have another computer, try connecting it to that one. If you still get the pattern the monitor is most likely toast. If it works on another computer, your video card may have died.

    suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

    Thumbs up

    Hey Kev;

    Are we talking about a CRT monitor or an LCD flat-panel?

    First: do as solonar suggested: plug the monitor into a second computer (if that's an option) and see if the problem goes away. If so, it's definitely a bad video card in your computer. (Easy fix - just order a new one. Your son can help you pick one out, and I'm sure he'll help you install it.)

    If the problem follows the monitor, then it's either a bad cable or a bad monitor. (Yes, cables can go bad!) Here's where it's important if it's a CRT (that is, like an old tube television) or a flat panel LCD monitor. If it's got a tube in it, it might just need to be degaussed. But if it's an LCD, it's probably broken.

    If you can't test it on another computer, then see if your son has a small LCD in his room. Many of them have 15-pin VGA connectors on the back. If so, you can use the same cable from your monitor to connect your computer to the TV. If you get a normal picture, then you know the problem is in the monitor. Otherwise it's either the cable or the video card.

    But I agree with Solonar: Most likely cause is a failed video card.

    just like buffo said.
    Is it a really strict pattern? everytime the same? sounds like your video card is damaged.. because when it's damages it tends to show a same pattern everytime and with all kinds of colors.

    I know my eeepc used to do something very similar to this every time I tried to overclock it.

    Have you tried overclocking it at all? It may be causing issues.
