    ya could be really old rules, or someone read off something on an insurance policy or something

    Again, why not just ring the production manager and ask the question? Until you do, you're just speculating, and may still get it wrong.
    They're normally very helpful and nice people (well the Brixton Academy guys are anyway)

    Here's the answer I got:

    "I think it relates to mirror balls etc which should be interlocked to the laser equipment so that if the mirror stops moving or the beam is misaligned then the beam stops automatically. If you aren't using any of these then it won't be a problem."

    Wow. A mirror ball with a built-in sensor? Not £9.99 from my local disco store.
