Hey guys, looking to build a lumia myself, I have most parts on order, using a 532 and a 405 cheapie jobs from ebay to get it up and running. I found a 0.6rpm motor on ebay too and have a steel Rittal hinge lid control panel case from work. My tricky bit is making some wheels for it, I may have a go at warping some CD end of stack discs but also found a dentist/surgeon lamp in our skip with nice glass that I removed, it has a nice texture that I think will work well but need to cut 60mm discs with centre holes for mounting.
My question is has anyone used glass hole cutters for the 60mm discs and how easy are they to use? Any tips??
My advice would be to find a proper hub for your motor(s) and glue/epoxy your glass wheels in place. I would avoid drilling holes - might ruin a piece while drilling that is hard to replace, as well as will likely stress the glass towards cracking at a later date. Good luck.
+1 for using a 'Hub' glued to the glass disc. If you know someone with a lathe it doesn't take long to knock up a few hubs from some aluminium bar.
If you need the glass discs cutting look for a local optical Lab that makes spectacle lenses. They'll have the capability to cut discs up to about 80mm in diameter.
