np i also thought about taking apart the ir headsets that they mention on that page and maby trying it with 2 of them. a data system would work also i was just trying to get some sortive laser communications system that i can build for not much money even if i have to use one that is already built but have to modify to do it.

I have a Heathkit/Zenith laser and receiver from 1985 that did exactly what you describe. Also have the manual and instructions from the guy who built it at home. Still works fine.

I dug out my copy of the laser cookbook to double check the information you need is in it...

    http://www.amazon.com/Laser-Cookbook.../dp/0830693904

It was released in 1988 but it has the relevant circuits and information. Although I would probably substitute a modern diode driver. It noted even a red led (with clear shell) can be used as a receiver for red wavelengths. The audio amplifier after that.

I doubt Bob was interested in selling his, I look forward to seeing it in his Museum some day.

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

Adam's right, not for sale. But the circuit is simple and cheap. I recommend the "Laser Cookbook" as described above.
