NEWB: Dichro fitting

Hi Guys,

Sorry to sound like a newb, but thats what I am!

I picked up a pair of dichros from Dave last year, I am finally fitting them. I have:

1 x reflect blue transmit green & red dichroic filter
1 x reflect red transmit green & blue dichroic filter

Now, I have fitted these to the mounts, I have *assumed* what appears to be the reflective surface is fitted towards the reflected laser. Correct?

What is puzzling me is this:

Dichro 1: Refects 660 & 445, Passes 532
Dichro 2: Refects 445, Passes 532 & 660

Shouldn't the 1st refect ONLY 660?

Any help, tips, clues etc welcomed!

you got that absolutely correct (in that sense, a dichro is like a front surface mirror). otherwise, the reflected beam will pass the dichro two times and create reflections and artifacts.

there is not much choice with the dichros you've got. green, then red and then blue is the only way to go.

if you could talk with dave and "exchange" a dichro, you could have a better setup with the red as the last colour and closest to the scanners.
this way you have minimum losses for red as it only reflects off one dichro and you can compensate the losses in blue with some extra power

could you post some reflect and transmit losses after you are done installing?

Hi Wayne,

The reason for this is that it allows alternative configurations to be serviced by the same dichro.

I have the same setup in my projector. You can do as suggested and use an alternative order to get the most of your red, but the dichros that offer decent transmission and reflection losses are more expensive and harder to come by.

The laser-wave reflect red dichro doesn't work so well with 445 as you have just discovered.

I do have some Kvant dichros here, however they are 10mm x 20mm, not round. Would this be of use? If so, Ill send you over a bit

Right on Wayne! I've been putting off drill&tap day for a while now as I've never done it before. It may become "mark&take to the machine shop" instead here.

Near field alignment complete.
Far field alignment complete.
Colour balance adjustment complete.

Oh man, I am like a fat kid with a lolly-pop! So much fun!

A Big thanks to Rob (Stanwax) for his excellent beam alignment guide, Bill for his excellent projector wiring paper and to all those that have helped me with info and parts (Dave, Adam, Simon etc.).



I can't wait for the sun to go down...

Next on the agenda is completing the e-stop, long cable runs, Laser Safety course/license on Aug 12 and then my first live show on Sept 20!
