Does anyone have the facility to rip the music from the video. I still haven't figured a way to do it on my stupid Dell Vista laptop.

PM me if you can help.

    Thanks

Thanks for the kudos, guys. I have to admit that I was pretty pleased with the way this one came out. I agree with Stuka; it knocks "Above" out of first place for me too.

I took a little inspiration from Aaron's "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" show, and then added my own spin on things. Really though, what makes this show so special (at least in my mind) is the music. It's so different from anything else, and yet it still rocks!

Glad you all are enjoying it. And yeah, as Richard said, for those who are still looking for the music files, check the FTP server. The archive I uploaded there has an mp3 file "for alignment purposes" that should get you started.

In my opinion, this show looks the best when viewed on just two or three projectors, with the scan-fields of the left and right flanking projectors crossing at least 15 feet in front of the viewer. Also, for those of you who feel comfortable crowd-scanning, the show is intentionally set up with all the really hot frames (static beams, etc) at the very top of the scan field. So you can set your projector pretty low and still enjoy the show withouth getting zorched. (Insert usual disclaimer here about the dangers of audience scanning and the need to actually measure irradiance levels for the show and perform MPE calculations to be truly safe.)

i'll toddle on over to the Pangolin showspace and get it there... I need that 'evaluation' music though

    Cool

If anyone is having difficulty with the audio portion, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I should be able to solve the problem - ahem.

Regarding a virtual classroom, I might be able to do that at some point in the future, but right now I'm super busy. Maybe next year I'll record a video of me putting a show together and post it.

The biggest thing is to have some sort of idea in your head as to what you want the show to look like first, before you sit down to create it. I often sit down with just a pencil and paper in front of me and listen to the song over and over while writing down notes and little sketches about what types of effects would look good. Then I use that paper outline as a foundation for building the show itself.

When it's time to get started, I load up a *bunch* of random beam frames first, before I do anything else. That way I have a huge selection of frames to choose from when I'm building the show. If I get to a part in the song where I know I want a sweeping fan of color, I can easily pick one from the 30 or more that I have in the frame file. That saves time vs me having to go look for those frames on the hard drive when I actually need them. Of course, sometimes the exact frame I want isn't available, so I have to either edit an existing frame or draw a new one from scratch, but that doesn't happen too often (at least for beam shows). When everything is all done, I just delete all the unused frames in the frame file.

I also preview the show a lot while I'm building it. Most of the time I just use the preview window, but once the show is mostly done, I like to do the final tweaking with a live projector so I can see how the show will look in laser. Sometimes I've thrown out entire sequences, because while they might look cool in the preview window, some things just don't look nearly as good in laser.

Really though, the best way to learn how to make a show is just to sit down and try it. Expect to spend a lot of time on your first show (20 hours or more is not uncommon), but as you get better at it, your speed will improve. Even so, some shows will still take a lot of time to get right. But the more shows you make, the easier it becomes. You'll also get a better feel for what will be good and what will suck, and that really helps!

Make sure you pick a good song. You need a definite beat that you can synchronize to, and you want to be sure you are already very familiar with the song yourself, so you can anticipate things as you're building the show. Finally, make sure that the song will appeal to a large audience. Don't be afraid to try something a little different, but be aware that your musical tastes may not be the same as the average person, so don't go overboard. (There aren't too many people who are interested in atonal screeching chant, for example!)

I'd love to check this out, I missed it at SELEM. Is there an ILDA stream available?

Looks very complex and well timed. Lovely show Adam.

Wish mine were as good, although my excuse is its never easy working without a laser. Hopefully that excuse is going soon though.

that loading of a bunch of random beam frame sounds like a great idea!
Actually i never used a frame before, i always custom draw anything.. even for beamshows.
it's a pain in the ass and slow lol..
i should try it an other way.
Except for when selling a show that is
