Your right it does. A lot of people have lost or are losing my respect over this DJ Allen thread, and other similar threads in the past.
Allen wears safety eyewear because he does not want to hurt his eyes when "tinkering" with the lasercope. He owns more safety eyewear than I do for that wavelength and power level. I seem to recall a picture of you, Pat, posted here, burning the shit out of a 2x4 while not wearing safety eyewear. While I realize that you know what you are doing, and that your face was in the "shadow" of the piece of wood so that you were not directly looking into the 532nm glare, I believe that proves my point very nicely. Ask yourself this, what does that picture tell a newbie that is getting the safety info crammed down their throat? It gives a very confusing image of laser safety. Was everybody else in the room with you wearing safety eyewear when that photo was taken?
This reminds me of the time when I first got a laserscope, and a couple industry pros that I looked up to since I was 14 basically threw out a friendship because "
if I had to ask those questions I had no business owning a laserscope", and then refused to help me in any way shape or form. I had never felt so humiliated or insulted in my life. I was so proud of finally getting one, I could not understand why nobody wanted to help me. That laserscope I had was not a fraction as dangerous as the industrial and surgical systems I was using at the time, yet almost nobody wanted to help me.
Many people told me to get rid of it because I would hurt myself and others. I never hurt myself with it, I never hurt others with it. I did get to do lasers for Janet Jackson with it at the Rose Bowl Stadium though after nearly 2 years of trying to figure out how the damn thing worked. Big props to Kyle Garner for taking a huge chance on me and helping me "de-medicalize" that unit and Greg Makhov for imparting enough safety wisdom that I never hurt myself or anybody else with it.
That little story right there is why I choose to help Allen at this time, as does Steve Roberts, regardless of the past.
The real problem here is that Allen was labeled as public enemy #1 from day #1 because he had a laserscope and did not know a hell of a lot about it. This guy's first laser was 5+ watts, and his parents would not have allowed him to keep it, or upgrade to a laserscope, if he was fucking around blinding himself or others.
When backed into a corner by everybody that you had hoped would help you, what would you do?
The infamous pro dj allen thread from a while back was a source of amusement for him , as it was many of us, once it became clear to him that nobody here was going to help him. I do realize that he seemed to ignore the advise of many pros and hobby types alike back then, but that does not mean he was taking it out doing audience scanning and blinding innocent people. More than half of his posts were posted simply to get a rise out of the people that were trashing him. Many posts he made were simply to let people "hear what they wanted to hear".. At the risk of sounding like a jerk, I would have acted the very same way in that regard had I been slammed over and over like everybody here did to him.
Jon, to answer your question about filing his sho variance? No, he has not, but he is very shortly, for a much "safer" system than a laserscope. I know this for a fact, because I have spent the last few weeks working with him on that project, as have a few other people. He has been going to school this past year, not out doing illegal audience scanning shows with his laserscope.
Back to his laserscope- He has rented the unit out to a few pro light show companies for use with their own projectors, with no complaints or issues, and has other rentals lined up for the future as well.
As far as
past behavior. I'm not going to defend or criticize that. What I care about the most is the
present. The DJ Allen of the
present shut his laser off and walked away from it for a few days because I did not have time to finish helping him over the phone one evening. Does that sound like the same Allen that you are making fun of?
I strongly second Steve Roberts' post. I personally do not post here very much, but as some of you realize, when I do, it is usually important and helpful. I try to stay out of public pissing contests, but this irks me in particular, due in no small part to my own experience when I first got a lasercope. If anybody wants to question my experience level, I've been working with lasers in everything from light show to industrial and surgical applications since 1992, as well as co-authoring the safety course a lot of you are so eager to get a certification from.
Bottom line- You guys knock it off with the Allen bashing or I may go delete all of my useful posts such as the optics cleaning ones and the ones in which I have given useful variance advise. Steve may do something similar if this continues. Which one of you wants to continue this bashing and ruin it for all other PL members?
Give the kid a chance. If he fucks up and proves Steve Roberts and myself wrong, we'll both be at the front of the line with you guys, Deal?
