Also, do you have any firewall software? If so, try temporarily turning it off.

Hm... Can you open up the network settings for the VMware VM and see what mode the network configuration is in? There are a few options - NAT, Bridged, and Host-only, if I remember correctly. If it's not Bridged, try changing it to that (and select the Ethernet interface to bridge to).

This may be a software issue similar to the ones I used to have with some Windows games using VMware.

Even when VMware is using bridged networking for all of its adapters, it advertises multiple network adapters to the host operating system. This can be a problem for some programs (or drivers) which bind to the first network adapter by default.

In certain conditions, the first network adapter will be one of the (unused) VMware adapters, leaving the other network adapters, including the physical one, unaccessed.

Of course this could only be an issue if VMware is running Windows as a HOST operating system instead of a client one, as the client OS will only expose a single (virtual) network adapter.

If there is absolutely no response from the DAC, not even a green 'link' light, it may also be the result of a hardware failure. Try a different cable and see if the MBP indicates a working network link (in either Windows or OSX) when you plug it in.

If the hardware link works, you may be able to diagnose some things by giving the DAC a ping, but you'll have to ask j4cbo to find out if the DAC will even answer ICMP echo requests.

The DAC is up, but there seems to be a routing issue (from the log). Can you open up command prompt and paste the output of these two commands:
    ping 169.254.212.29
    ipconfig /all

j4cbo: out of curiosity, is that a 2 or 4-layer PCB? I'm guessing the latter.

    It's a 4-layer board.

I've built a new tool to look on the network for DACs and show their status, IP address, firmware version, and so on. It'll also be useful for troubleshooting to figure out what's going wrong.
