now if it only ran off a regular outlet

I love ion's, they are beautiful and wonderful examples of engineering, but the power/cooling requirements put them out of my realm of interest

on a more serious note, will this nice ion be matched with that yummy little cube you have been building with adam?

You can get a single phase after market power supply for that Coherent Star. I have not seen one for sale for a number of years. But I do know some have been made. what is the mfg date? I am at 4500ish hours on mine with one ampule broken, it didnt need to be done. I was mad I didnt get to crack it myself, damn rmud..... When the laser event happens in January you can bring it down and play. I have a full spare LSDI Excalibur projector setup for that laser. I'm free most weekends as well if you want to test it here. I've been known to use my hot tub for cooling water. Nothing like lasers, 3 phase and a hot tub.....here hold my beer watch this....

    Thats a nice laser!!
I remember looking at pictures of that laser when i was "growing up"

I was always impressed bij the coherent innova 90 laser..
    Big Red canon :-)
It was the first real big laser i came "in contact" with...

    I am a real GAs/ion NOOB....
Can someone explain where the Ampule's are for?

Not all Ion lasers have Ampule's, It's a small glass vial charged with extra gas. The vial is in a rubber/plastic like tube. You crush the ampule and it will release an extra charge into the tube. For the Coherents you take a reading at full power off the psu to check how the charge is doing in the tube and if you need to bust the ampule.

I've only seen them on Lexel's and Coherent's. On the Lexel, there were 4 amules, 2 argon, 1 krypton and 1 ar/kr. I don't remember the Coherent one having a label on the ampules. This way you have a little extra life between having the tube refurbished.

Yes, and, interestingly, the 'one Gen-older' model of the Star, the "Spectrum" (..till an I-70 tube, but with accessible brewsters / mirrors...) had the 'giant' reservour / ballast, like the Lexxies, ie:

...where the ampoules were 'top-side', vs the Star, where they are 'underneath'... either way, a precise, 'safe' provision to self-fill the tube, w/o the 'risk' of over-filling / a stuck valve, like the twin-chambered I-90s... great workhorses of an ion-laser, and like Nate said, this puppy shows over 9500 hrs on the meter (!) and still, has two full ampoules! (...not sure, though, if this is the *original* tube, or, if they replaced the tube, like a 'cartridge' (which you can..) and they just never 'reset' the hour-meter... dunno... I almost can't imagine a cath lasting for that-long...) Anyhoo, it's a 'winner' of a tube, that's for sure...

Yep, and, imo, that would be-preferable to running *any* ion off an un-regulated / un-conditioned rotary phase-generator... any 'show-power' type genny, tho, will at least be able to maintain the V's, reasonably w/in-spec... it's mostly the cath-transformer, you need to worry-about, longer-term... too-high / too-low, long-term = not-good...

Anyhoo - Welcome to 'The Club', Nate! Here's to seein the first lumia / machita shots...
    j

PS - Don't forget, when the time-comes, the 'great-value' of the "machado" - http://www.creativelaser.de/hardware.../maschado.html - not-bad performance, (compared to a 'true' machita..), and especially, since it's exponentially cheaper...
....and armed only with his trusty 21 Zorgawatt KTiOPO4...

"Nothing like lasers, 3 phase and a hot tub.....here hold my beer watch this.... "
Now just how is a regular laser noob supposed to be able to cope with his own miserable existence knowing that the upper echelons enjoy life such as that ?

    "the "PL IOC"? "
That just rolls off the tongue...smooth. And the badge/patch ?!?
So now to off the wife & kid, quit the job, sell everything and track down a unit for myself.
Maybe name it too. my precious...
