Right, having tried this, its close to bloody impossible.

The main problem is the 1064nm I have at the moment is not fibre delivered, so the only way I have of aiming it is to physically tilt and pan the whole laser, which weighs a good 100Kg+ .. and after a fair bit of effort with two of us shifting the laser we have so far failed to score a hit

Too damn cold out for much more of that messing about.

edit: and yes we did consider just holding the chicken leg in front of the laser instead, but declined to try it.

That chicken is a vicious bastard at the best of times.

Would you like me to buy you a proper hat? You don't HAVE to be a traffic warden, you CHOOSE to be.
I'm not even going to dignify that with a response.

    Yeah, UV, edited.

A bit more reading up on that, and apparently it was used on a UK ship based system, it causes flourescence in the lens itself, and because the light is coming from the lens, its not easy for the people its aimed at to even detect which direction the laser is coming from.

I suspect the riot-rifle thing is in the visible spectrum, and quite possibly green

I've been digging around for specs for a few weeks now, so far nothing. I do have some "other channels" that may reveal a bit of info. From what I have been able to dig up, it uses a range finder coupled with a variable focus system to deliver known energy densities at the target.

Perhaps to continue the riot-rifle topic on a new thread. Maybe you can make a new start there. This thread has been contaminated with your derogatory remarks about the US being stupid, PL being paranoid, etc etc. This thread is old, tired and ready for the dumpster imho.

Completely-agreed, I simply rally against the idea of stating '... football helmets / all-body padding are stupid and totally-un-needed'... not the *right* to opin-such, just how wrong that statements like that *could* be a contributing-factor in some kids' injury...
I think it's only fair to those accused of understating the "danger" associated with lasers <1W, that *some* documented evidence be presented that describes it. More than a "guess" backed up with a "wager". Are there NO statistics? NO threads or posts telling stories of accidental injuries? NO contacts from parents hunting down the source of their children's misfortune with a laser or at a laser show? Newspaper articles? Incident reports?

And really, if some newcomer to this forum happened upon this thread on their first day after receiving a 1W blue handheld laser, after all the safety admonitions and warnings they must've gotten along the way of getting it, do we *really* think they would walk away thinking it's OK to point it into any kind of eyeballs? When essentially all the responses are safety related? Someone's lost sight of the forest for the trees. Maybe that's why the US doesn't produce engineers anymore.

Recklessly interfering with Darwin’s natural selection process, thereby extending the life cycle of dim-witted ignorami; thus perpetuating and magnifying the danger to us all, by enabling them to breed and walk amongst us, our children and loved ones.

@ Eidetic, just google "laser pointer eye injuries" and you'll get bucket-loads of reports just like this one:

    interesting.
some of the green hand held pointers donot have good IR filters,so 1064 may well be presant and very dangerous
