Oh sorry my bad. well okay maybe il try that...but i think i prefer to have a ethernet dac to avoid problems.

You are unique! Just like everyone else...
Mum: What do you want for breakfast? Me: Lasers Ofcource!
i think we should upgrade to the ethernet version anyway, the usb lite is very good for its money, but still an introductory, entry-level product.
i wouldn't base a commercial show on it
is there a european distributor of riya dacs (or riya direct of course)?
it seems silly to me to have to buy this from the US, while it is being made in europe
"its called character briggs..."
No problems for me, had a Riya Micro uSB for almost 3 years now, and four different laptops, over that period of time.
Goes every time. Give them a chance to find out whats going on, and try a hub with a external power supply.
Having designed a USB product TWICE (never again!) I can tell you there are many laptops that do not properly implement USB when using things other then memory sticks.
Many laptops limit USB power draw to 50 mA when the specification is 500 mA. If the device draws more then 50 mA, even for just microseconds, the laptop then halts enumeration. Many laptops are not tested to the USB 2.0 Spec, to save money, as the certification process costs MegaDollars.
If your having to plug it and unplug it, its the USB Enumeration process on the laptop, not the connector.
Go into "Devices" and see what its doing. I bet you see a icon every time you plug it in. But the ICON will have a yellow flag saying it cannot enumerate properly. This is a hardware/firmware driver issue common to many laptops, and is why I had to withdraw my USB product from the market. Again, a poor implementation of USB on the laptop.
Give them a chance to solve this.

Steve I checked the connector over here, even tested it on an usb 3.0 and usb 2.0 usb port.
Looked in the device manager first time hookup up, it keeps going on and off. unless you bend the end where the usb connector meets the wire, then the connection is stable.
So it's definitely a connector issue. (tried it on 6 computers, same results on all)
Fortunately I haven't had any issues with mine. Yet. And I bought it used. It's definitely a connector issue. I have to admit the build quality of this dac is not that great.
Since PJ has confirmed the problem,
While I would not normally suggest to a beginner to solder a USB cable, the signal strengths are strong, shielding is not that critical, and very SHORT, on the order of 6 mm or so, splices with heat shrink tubing to insulate them are not going to impair function that much. I have done it with no issues, however I have been splicing cable since 1982 or so...
its 4 wires, and the shield is not a critical part of the circuit, red to red, green to green, white to white, black to black and loosely join the shields with a short lenth of stranded wire.
Remember you need a outer layer of heat shrink over the cable before you splice, and electrical tape/heat shrink inside the spliced section,
It has to be soldered, just twisting the wires will not work at this data rate.
Splice it to a spare cable and get it over with!
But give RIYA time to make good on this first.

You've not been following the electrical/electronics/engineering capabilities of BQX then?

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?
I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.
Official message from RIYA:
Some our customers informed us that they have problems with RIYA Multibus Lite controllers last time: not stable start of work... disconnecting and registering as "not recognized device"...
We with our customers have done analyse of problem.
Our verdict: unfortunately several USB connectors (cables), which we used in last series of RIYA Multibus Lite controllers, had not good quality.
For customers, who have similar problems: very sorry... write me please PM or send please message to info@riyalasers.com; we will make for you repair controllers.
For future customers: we changed type of cables for this model of controllers (look photo please).
We with our customers tested two tens of controllers with new cable type on several computers within two last weeks; we do not see troubles now.
We hope do not make similar problems for our customers in future.
Thank for all for support.
