    I've been flowing your discussion on alt.lasers with Steve Roberts about this idea. I think the 4-facet unit (possibly with a hole in the center for a 5th beam) would be the way to start... That way the mounting and alignment issues will be more reasonable. (It's still going to be hard!)

    Steve seemed to have a good handle on the specs, and seemed to suggest that they should cost around $50 or so each for a trial run. (I'm guessing that a trial run would be ~10 pieces?)

    Might want to check with Spec or Astroguy and see if any of their Chinese contacts might be willing to undertake a job like this... But even with a 4-facet axicon you could get 1 full watt of red! (Assuming you had the center hole for the 5th beam, that is.) Granted, the resulting beam thickness would be larger than normal... Still, it would be better than what's available now. (And cheaper too!)

    So, are any other PhotonLexicon members out there interested in this idea? Personally, I'd love to see this happen. I like the idea of ganging together 5 DVD burner diodes and getting nearly a watt of red for next to nothing!

    I really want to give a try on this one

    But... 7x100mW =700mW = $$$

    Well.. maybe I can start with 3 lasers first then add some more later..
