I agree the beams look pretty hot from the video, but it may not be quite as bad as it seems.

I've looked at a couple of similar acts in the past, and as long as the separation distance was maintained, and the sources were set to an appropriate divergence, it was doable.

Of course though, if nobody has any idea of the exposures the act creates, best stay clear.

they are standard 200mw pointers and they dont know what divergence is, or MPE or well.... anything.... they just think oooh so cool and plan to move around the crowd at NYE, however the promoter is gonna cancel their show or i wont rig color lasers for them.

This shit would not be legal here unless the following are assured

    • beams are no less than 3M above the public AND crew
    • A detailed laser display plan in acourdance with AS3211 is submitted
    • A licensed LSO is in attendance
    • All lasers are registered AND in accordance with AS2211 AND state regulations

This "shit" would never be legal here, nor could real eye safety be guaranteed. Not unless laser power was 1mW or less.

LOL show me the E-stop, shutters etc.

yeah said i pull out, they keep saying its safe and i say i dont want the risk.... I love this community when it supports someone saying no to a promoter, in a much earlier post i once spoke about a party that wanted lasers pointed over an airport.... I really enjoyed seeing the replies on PL

Kudos to you, Dan... ..you'll always have my vote for 'doing it right'...

Prolly not enough time to get them to 'get it' / make any changes for NYE, but, perhaps for future co-shows, you could demo, or at least explain to them, them how if they simply defocus the lens on the OEM modules, or, if they're glued-on / fixed-focus, just add-on a small 'cap' with a lens that blows-out the div. by, like, 1.5x at least, etc, etc - it would be saf-er, and yet, not likely 'kill' the effect too-bad, since they're, a) constantly moving, anyway, b) doesn't seem like they're doing this in massive 30K-person arenas, where they would need good collimation to keep the 'intended effect' in the much larger space... just a thought..

Anyhoo, kudos to you and your example...
    cheers..

I quite agree, if the act is just a jackass, and there is no thought or safety awareness having gone into the performance, then yes, steer well clear, and make your concerns known the promoter, and building owner.

With careful planning, these types of act can be safe to perform in front of people, and I have helped some professionals who are very skilled in their art achieve this. But there were lots of controls in place. The problem, as ever, is that you will always get a cheap imitator do such things without thinking or even knowing the risks. Just like the person who books them.

Well done for having the ethics to walk away from something you didn’t agree with.

I once saw the origional juggler who started this and PATENTED his act. He went out of his way after more then one professional laserist jumped him, to fix his act. He used hazers, he had massive amounts of air handling gear directing and redirecting his fog/haze on stage, and the theatre was dark. It looked VERY cool with just a few milliwatts.

The custom gyroscopic devices were pulling Gs that few laser modules could stand up to. The lasers were being used like YO-YOs on some sort of stringed juggling gear. I took a bunch of small eye hits and LAUGHed it off, very safe and well below the MPE, yet well defined sheets and cones of light.

I hate clones. That guy is not a even a good twirler.

Kudos for calling it the right way!
