    Default Some questions about DT40-Wide

    Toodilooo

Im about to upgrade one of my projectors from china 12k low performance scanners to
DT40-Wildies and i read somewhere in the manual that the amps needs some proper heatsinks to survive.

So before i get them i would like to prepare myself for the mod and get some heatsinks but im not sure what size they should be.. Does anyone know the size of the amps for DT40 wides?

Another question, are they tuned on arrival or do i have to learn something new when installing them?

    Cheers

Can't comment on the wides, but all 5 sets of DT's that I own came very well tuned out of the box.

For heatsinking, I tend to just screw to a decent metal plate such as the baseplate or case plate. If I need extra heatsinking I apply GPU/motherboard heatsinks to the underside of the plate with self adhesive thermal pads. This means the heat transmission stays more local to the drivers, rather than spreading out further. It also moves some of the heat to the airspace under the plate, which can be beneficial if you wanted to fan cool it, whilst having optics sealed.

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

40W amps do get VERY hot. if not properly heatsinked, they will begin to freak out. I attach them directly to baseplate *and* put a fan on them.

you also may want to get a better P.S. than what they come with. The included .8A or 1A power supply is no wheres near enough current to drive these. i would suggest at least 2-3A per channel (+12V and -12V)

What power laser are you using? they DO NOT have properly coated broadband mirrors. very lossy at the 445 wavelength and if you are using multiple watts of 445, they CAN and WILL melt. (>4 or 5W. At 6W, i personally saw 2 sets' mirrors go bye bye!!)

^6W RGB, yeah- you should be fine. its just that lower wavelength of 445 with multiple watts that they have some issues with. I think 6-10W max (im guessing. nothing technical to back this up) of RGB should be fine. Will probably just be lossy.

Andrew from DLS (hes a member here) had these 2 sets of 40W's that the coatings literally melted right off of the mirrors with 6W/445. I have a 40W set with 10W/532 on it, so you should be perfectly fine.

i can still only dream of those high powers my laser that i will be using the wides in is rated 1.2 W :P
I guess i don't have to worry about melted mirrors

but you have to factor in some extra 445, just in case the mirrors proove lossy at this wavelength

1.2w is plenty of power, make no mistake about it. just a couple years ago, maybe half a watt max is all a low budget hobbist could dream of. Heck, RGB was a dream all in itself. It was a green world for a long long time

hahah i could always use some extra power
Im sure i will upgrade and upgrade and upgrade and the story goes on.. Im still quite new in this world. Started out 2 months ago with this 1.2 w that im going to upgrade now, and i recently got 2 more projectors. And then some dacs and software. Quite expensive hobby, but it looks so damn nice

I think i should hit the bed now before i place an order on something i can't afford at the moment

These are the heatsinks I am using - they are also right in the path of a fan. These are probably overkill, and take a bit of room, but mounting the smaller supplies under the baseplate should free up some room.

Nothing is bolted down yet in this projector - I'm still deciding where everything will go, and have yet to get lasers. Yes they are the DT40W and yes without sinks they get mighty warm just IDLING.
