Default U.S. Web programmers or web smarties?

    Hey guys/gals-

Any opinions on US based web hosters that are very good? I am currently using 1 and 1 internet and they just seem to be getting worse and worse. Is it dificult to take website(s) from 1 hoster to another?? Or is it as simple as just copying directories from 1 and pasting it to the new directories? What are a few of the most important things to look for when going to a new hoster? (other than up time).

Any input, advice and/or opinions would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    -Marc

moving your website should be fairly trivial. tar everything up, drop it on a new hosting provider, untar, and update any paths that fail.

then log into your registar and update the dns pointers to your new provider.

as an old school unix person, i like to have shell access, and full control of httpd.conf and access to log files.

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

Ive had about 30 urls on hostgator for about 4 years , seem to be top notch and Cpanel ..very very very easy to use , and they are CHEAP ! , never ever known them to be "down" , they have too many back up plans for issues

Very timely post as we (my company) were just having this discussion Monday morning. We're looking for someone new as well. Right now, we don't really have access to making changes to our site - it all has to go through our creator and host, who has a full time job, and does sites for several other businesses, We pay a monthly fee but, his responsiveness recently is pathetic. We want to move our site to someone new as well but, some have said we would have to recreate it all from scratch with someone else. Plus he used flash which apparently doesn't play nice with a number of mobile phones. This is actually four main sites - one for each banquet facility as well as our main shop. Each one is laid out the same, just different pictures/verbage.

As other have already posted, migration is fairly simple IF you backup the public_html tree first.

Its a little more tricky if you have sql databases, but again these can be tar balled easily via Cpanel and recreated on a new server.

If you allow a cut-over period with both hosting providers, before you migrate DNS then you can be sure the new site is A Ok (accessed via IP rather than host name) before you pull the plug on the old host. I have done this myself several times.

But you have regular backups of the existing site, performed regularly anyways right?

    Yes- regular backups.

Damn, there are some smarty pants on this forum!

We keep leaving GoDaddy to save a few bucks and keep coming back. They are very commercial but have the infrastructure to put out a vastly superior product we have found. Mounds of bandwidth, helpful service, and lot of perks not found other places. I would recommend them highly.
