It really depends on what type of lasers you are looking into.

Our lab will be purchasing a 473nm laser soon for a biological study of neural modulation via artificially expressed light activated ion chanels in the brain.
Many laboratories use stabilized lasers for fluorescence excitation in tissue studies. (stability, longevity)
Femtosecond pulse lasers are used in 2-photon fluorescence imaging. (speed, tunability)
I beleive the Empire may have used some form of laser to destroy planets.(power)
Don't forget fiber optic and free-space communication.(longevity, efficiency, speed)

Many of the more exotic uses for lasers require very good beam quality and coherence length, thus requiring some pretty complex cavities if you're talking about solid state stuff. Examples include holography and interferometry. Also, there are surgical and other medical uses.

sure, my most interesting using wavelength is 532nm, 473nm, 640nm, 658nm, 635nm, 650nm, 405nm,785nm, 808nm, 980nm,1064nm lasers.
yes, most using are needed high quality products, just like distance of intervene, stability etc. we had done some other using lasers for school and company here in China, but be honest, during these days, maybe our most interesting is powerful using.
