We use them to illuminate stuff on military instruments.

Can you tell us a little how these are made? Why does it coat the inside of the glass so uni-form?

The glass tubes have a psospher coating
Tritium emits an electron when it decays - exciting the phospher. Coating glass with phospher is something that has been done a lot.

Q: Are they legal?
A: For the most part, just like lasers. There are laws passed against mass distribution of tritium tubes because the NRC doesn't want these things to end up on walmart shelves. As for small sales like this, it's not that huge of a concern.

Can you clarify this, please? In most states in the US there are no laws restricting sale of lasers - only their exhibition. Is it *legal* to sell these, or are you saying that it's not legal but "nobody will notice"?
