    Because the control freak guy paying for it doesn't want to spend any of his time thinking about the choice and doesn't trust recommendations from anyone, is spending client's money, and cares way more about getting it in and speed of service than the $85K price.

    New current limited bench supply arrived yesterday, from China, so I can fix it.
    Its on my bedside table as a reminder for this weekend.

    Eidetic pretty much has it right...

    I inherited the system, I did not design it from the ground up.

    In the commercial world, I would be allowed to make different choices.
    In the academic world, you sometimes have to play with the cards dealt you.

    One of those cards can be asking for future funding when you had a equipment failure. Funders do not take kindly to oddball equipment that goes down.

    This has not stopped me from doing the odd " Kobayashi Maru" once in a while.

    Funded projects get the best hardware I can buy long term, that will be reusuable when the funding/project is done with minimal operating costs. "Unfunded" projects get the best improvising I can do, and do suprisingly well some times.

    We do get audited on such things.....
