    I would not want to hook up a diode like that. A simple driver could make sure you dont fry your diode.
    You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!

    Yeah, I didn't plan on actually using the resistor and a battery method myself... But so long as you don't have any capacitance in the circuit and you size the resistor correctly you shouldn't have any problems with the didoe. (Dr Lava has a post on CPF that talks about the concept in greater detail, but suffice to say the resistor he was including with the deal would be safe for batteries up to 3.2 volts.)

    I've actually got three drivers that I bought off E-bay and never used. (Plus I've built one or two of the "Sams laser diode test circuit" units, which would work well...) So I would have used one of those to power the diode. Alas, that won't be happening. (At least not this time!) Crap...
