I emailed Dan asking if this can be added to a projector not built by X-Laser and if it will require an audience scanning variance (it does). It's not an add-on component, apparently. Here's his reply:

    Thats an awfully tricky question...

Technically, the answer is maybe depending on how the projector is built. For the system to work a lot of basic assumptions about the rest of the hardware have to be true and most systems currently sold in the world do not have the parameters to make this possible. Doing a retrofit might well be more trouble than its worth... but maybe it could be done depending on what you have.

The practical answer is that we are not likely to start accepting those sorts of projects in the near term because we simple do not have the bandwidth to complete them in a reasonable amount of time. As it is I think we are going to have to hire another guy... =)

In answer to your other question, yes, an audience scanning variance is required and yes, we will be coming out with something like the EZ variance kit but different. Audience scanning requires a higher level of effort in the paperwork for sure and so we can't easily just make it a 'sign here' kind of proposition. Our first interest is always safety and that would not be well served if we tried to turn it into a rubber stamp sort of thing, you know?

Thanks for the note, we appreciate your interest.

    Best,

    Dan Goldsmith

I can't wait to see what this is, and based on what the middle portion says, if I knew more about resistors, thermistors, and all the other mysterious "-ors," I'd be sending him my app right now.

I might be interested in two of these to compliment my 21W.... it'd be nice to have two projectors ready for audience scanning. Of course I'll need to get an audience scanning variance, but it will still be nice. =]

Psss ask what the technology is.....I'm intrigued.

    I'm guessing it lens based.

Yeah - My guess is that they've come up with a way to use Pangolin's new safety lenses (the half-lens design) with a lower-powered projector such that the irradiance is under the limit even at very close range (say, 4 meters or so, which would be about as close as you could get if the projector was 3 meters off the floor).

Still impressive that they've gotten an approved audience-scanning variance from the CDRH for it though...

We should know everything by this weekend. They're supposed to be demoing it at LDI.

    Yep, we are. Very excited!

We've been working on this for over two years and FINALLY everything has fallen into place.

We are going to have a good time this weekend and will definitely post video after the show. This is the largest setup we have ever done BY A MILE for a trade show and have something like 45 people (not counting union) working the show between sales reps, contractors and booth staff.

And guess who was dumb and scheduled like 14 hours worth of demos and training during which he has to be upright and talking ==> this guy. =)

I've been living in my hotel room for the last two days getting ready for all hell to break loose tomorrow when everyone flies in, freight comes and we power on. Anyway, install starts at 8AM and I start safety meeting at 9 so i'm going to bed.

    More to come!
