Default rgb/rgv build. got 500mw 532nm. need mw for rest

ive got a 500mw laser pointer im convinced to somehow turn into a laser module. (?) (it was cheap)
i need to know which mw the rest of the lasers has to be in order to get white light ability.

is it a bad road to go:
taking laser diodes out of laser pointers and diying laser modules?

    regards johannes

laser pointer cores typically aren't designed for more than just intermittent use and have thermal management issues.

i don't recommend using them in a laser projector.. especially something as powerful as a 500mW unit (assuming that's an accurate measurement).

assuming the 500mW figure is correct, i would recommend something in the ball park of:
    500mW 532nm
    300-500mW 637-642nm
    ~1500mW 445nm

there will be a lot of dissenting opinions on this.

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

I would have to agree with Swami in that a pointer core probably isn't the best route to go for an actual projector. If you want to make it into something more enjoyable than a pointer (and I'm surprised he didn't suggest this), I'd mount it into something and put a rotating textured glass wheel in front of it. You'll be surprised at the results... and a much better use than a pointer. If you want to eventually have a whitelight laser projector, you're in the right place though.

I don't know about "disenting" but, I'd use less 445 that Swami listed but, he's experienced enough to have his reasons.

"dissenting". feh, the one time autocorrect on my phone would have been actually useful.

yes... there's a lot to be said for laser lumia. this is slightly more complicated than just a single textured glass wheel rotating in the beam, but the fundamentals are the same.

i would also go for 1 watt of 445 or more, but i would probably want more red in there, too

    so, i'd say

    500mW 532nm
    500 ~650mW 637-642nm
    1000 ~1500mW 445nm

Ok you two,... not to step all over the OP but, I'll ask the question... you both suggest considerably more 445 than I would (just based on a stunning white from a couple of my projectors). Any particular reason? I've found that much more blue tends to give the white a color similar to those artificially blue halogen headlights you see on some cars, rather than a crisp snow white.

well, it is simple for me

A 500mw blue beam alongside a 500mw green beam is "almost invisible".
So, one could use a more balanced color scheme (in software) for white and go all out when displaying blue cues or parts of cues.

Plus, I also suggest a bit more red to remedy the "8000k xenon light white"

I agree with a little more red. I only ask because in my main projector, I have 1.2 watts of Kvant 640, 800mW of 532 and 900mW of 445 and it has one of the most beautiful pure whites I (and a number of people) have ever seen. I done got lucky.

Now returning to the previously interrupted thread...

    Laser power in good white:
    637nm : 480mw
    532nm : 500mw
    447nm : 1000mw
