I think he imparts a right-ward motion on the ring as it drops, thus helping it to appear as though it is riding the rod of light downward.

Also, watch his left hand when the coat hanger falls. It looks like he flips a switch there.

When I saw the thread title I thought someone was going to show me that one with the red laser pointer making eggs glow green in the dark. Daftest thing I think I ever saw a laser doing, trying to prove the unprovable. I'd like to know how it was faked though.
