    Default 4000 watt laser!

Yesterday I got the chance to go to one of our suppliers of stainless steel here in Taiwan and watch there 4000 watt cnc laser cutter in action.
All I can say is WOW. This thing cut thru 1/2" stainless like it was butter. If I get a chance to go back I will bring a camera.

Damn... 1/2 inch stainless? That's impressive.

What sort of laser? I'm guesing some kind of flowing-gas CO2 laser?

Yes, Ibelive you are right on. The thing is huge. The cutting table is inclosed in acrylic panels and the operator sits at a computer console. The laser itself is half the size of a shipping container.

Sounds very similar to a unit they have here in Charleston. Except the power is a lot lower on the one I saw. The company (Sheila's) uses the laser to cut out intricate pieces of wood that they use to make tiny replica's of famous houses here in Charleston. (People actually pay *stupid* prices for these damn little wooden houses.) The worst thing is that it's just the front facade that they're buying. They're not even 3D!

Anyway, the laser enclosure sounds similar to what you described. I think the unit they have only makes around a kilowatt or so, and they usually run it at 1/2 power or less. (If the power is too high it scorches the wood around the cut.) But it can cut very fine details - much nicer than the router table that they used to use!

I'm guessing that the one you saw was the grand daddy version of the one they have at Sheila's. Still, pretty damn cool! (And wicked expensive, I'll bet...)

I went back today and got some pics. I will have to wait untill this weekend to post them. I met with the owner and was told it cost $750,000.00 for the system.

Wow! three quarters of a million bucks! That's some serious coin... (They must cut a lot of stainless steel!)

Can't wait to see the pictures though...
