There are quite a few interesting USB power meters appearing, some of which can automatically calculate mw/cm by you entering the size of the sensor into the meter software which then does the rest. Makes the whole MPE issue much easier to deal with as very sensors are 10mm2 in area.

Which ones do you mean? Are they safe enough?

You can see the USB heads and meters in Ophir's catalogue. While they are indeed very neat pieces of gear, their cost puts them above the budget of most people building laser projectors for display purposes. I'm not aware of any resources offering affordable USB heads and software, but if there are, I'd love to hear about them.

There's no difference between a USB power meter and a physical power meter other than one uses a processor in a hand held unit and the other makes use of thee laptop for processing.

All should be accurate to their stated tolerances if from a reputable source, not least of which because most measurement is usually done in the head itself and not the meter.

Thor labs have some interesting options if you're careful to pair the correct USB unit and head together.

As for quality of any particular brand, I can't comment as I don't have a meter atm.

I think Steve’s (OP) requirement is to see if there were any lower cost options than the Coherent Lasercheck suitable for audience scanning assessments, so the sensors with USB connectors and built in built in ADCs are probably going to be ruled out.

We’ve got a number of circuits that we use for optical sensing of laser output. So maybe if there was some interest, we could utilise one of these in a small portable enclosure that could then be used to communicate to an iPhone and Android device providing a readout and wavelength selector. We could probably manufacture and sell these calibrated at a cost that is more attractive then the LaserCheck. …Anyone interested PM me.

Sounds like a reasonable extension to your existing mobile software.... [just sayin'...]

Talking about that, did I read something about an updated version a few months back?

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

Well, it would be a free app on the Appstore and Play. This would give you wavelength selection, power and irradiance readout, and the ability to store readings.

Maybe as a separate addition in the existing paid apps, there may be some other kind of integration.

Re updates to the current apps, the intended window I had to finish the changes disappeared, so the new features have been sat there not fully implemented for the last couple of months. Next week though, work can continue to get the updates ready for submission.

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.
