    It's a COIL " Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser " the kind developed by Northrup Grumman during Ronnie Raygun's tenure as Actor/Figurehead for his Starwars program against the Ruskies in that on going cold war to boost the economy and keep high ratings as the President of the USA. The original COIL laser was installed in a 707 jet liner for long range mobile use.

    They just managed to shrink it down to size. Make a short resonant cavity that runs constant wave, insert a passive q-switch the size of your head, track using an infra red quadrature based precision detector , target and fire the laser head that's mounted in a extremelly precise and fast gimbal mount. Add as much Oxygen and Iodine gas as you wish, excite by mixing gases and the normally Megawatt laser gets pulsed up by the passive q-switch, then "Voila" no more rocket.

    Ain't technology marvelous...

    Very unlikely. That laser seems to be putting light closer to the far IR.

    Here's an excerpt from wikipedia:

    Chemical oxygen iodine laser, or COIL, is an infrared chemical laser. It is capable of output power scaling up to megawatts in continuous mode. Its output wavelength is 1.315 µm, the wavelength of transition of atomic iodine.

    The laser is fed with gaseous chlorine, molecular iodine, and an aqueous mixture of hydrogen peroxide and potassium hydroxide. The aqueous peroxide solution undergoes chemical reaction with chlorine, producing heat, potassium chloride, and oxygen in excited state, with spontaneous lifetime of about 45 minutes. This singlet delta oxygen transfers its energy to the iodine molecules injected to the gas stream; they are nearly resonant with the singlet oxygen, so the energy transfer during the collision of the particles is rapid. The excited iodine then undergoes stimulated emission and lases at 1.315 µm in the optical resonator region of the laser.
    As you can see, it lases at a longer wavelength than CO2. To convert it into green you would need not to double it, but more likely quadruple it (or even more?)

    Anyway, it's a very interesting laser indeed. The gases are fed at near supersonic speeds and the end result from the reaction is potassium salt, oxygen and water. And best of all, it can be several MEGAWATTS in power :twisted: . I think I'll try to build one in my backyard :lol:

    With the power of this thing I expect it is pretty dangerous too.
    The ammount that must reflect off the target would give an instant suntan.
    Maybe they only use it over Iraq and Afghanistan :lol: :lol:

    isn't suntanning done by UV light?. I think with this thing you'd be medium rare, or well done, depending on the exposure time

    Definitely don't look into the beam, and no crowd scanning :lol: .

    They could use it to get rid of the enemy troops, probably easier than blowing their missiles out of the sky.
