    Default Blue beam quality

This week I received a new >50 mW dpss laser. Great toy but the beam really is TEM01 with a weak and strong side.
The laser looks like the CNI model and probably is but it is resold by a German seller, in my case through ebay.
I paid for "excellente strahlqualiteit, stabilitat and divergenz" (excellent beam quality etc.) and of course prefer a near round beam.

Some pics of the actual spot are here .

How bad is this? Is it acceptable for a blue or not?

    Your judgement is much appreciated.

Eh... How far away, or how long a beam is that? I'm not the expert but I wouldn't be happy with that. I have to leave for work in a few minutes but when I get home I'll do a 20 foot spot shot with my >50mW blue CNI and compare.

That beam looks very much like the mandelbrot figure  . Not very good.
Remember the future?, That'd today, as you imagined it yesterday.

Here's what mine looks like from about 25 feet...

The second one is a real close up and the third has a tape measure under it but you can't see the numbers... It's about a quarter to half inch spot, well I think, I had my goggles on and can't wear my glassed with them. ops:

    Thanks for the comparison.
It is discouraging since this is already a replacement laser because the first one died in 10 minutes .....
The seller has offered to refund my money but what I really want is a good quality laser .....

What is the experience with postal services? Does much damage occur to lasers such as misalignment due to rough handling or thermal stress?

BTW, should this type (CNI?) of laser have a IR filter at the output aperture as the final optical element?

Mine does. It's glued right on the aperture. You can see it when you unscrew the end.

They should but when mine came it didn't, Liu from CNI sent me one straight away, it arrived in a couple of days.
However when I installed the filter the o/p dropped to 38mW. They are refunding me part of the money but I havent recieved the refund yet and its 2 weeks .
