Clive,
I don’t really see where this discussion is heading or what the purpose is.
The scientists within IEC expert group on laser and optical radiation safety have established that the light emitted from the LIP type projectors, (which includes those using DLPs such as the Casios), is substantially different from the light emitted from a traditional laser product.
The risk posed by exposure to such light is orders of magnitude less harmful than that from a laser beam. Therefore it made no sense to consider the projectors as needing the same restrictions at other laser products.
The IEC group’s scientists, which I think most people would have no problem agreeing are more knowledgeable about the photobiological effects of light than most on this forum, have established that the light emitted from the LIPs products is so far removed from regular laser light, that their safety can be considered in a less onerous safety standard that is not in the laser safety group of standards, and differentiates itself from normal laser products.
I was present at the meetings throughout the week, and at not one time, (even from the more conservative scientists), did I hear any opinion that the light emitted from such products is anywhere near as harmful as you appear to believe.
For those reading who are more open to accepting scientific consensus from the worlds leading experts on the subject, I will reiterate the point that it is wrong to say that the emitted from such projectors needs to be considered the same as it is for regular laser products, or exceeds the retinal thermal MPE.
Be grateful that this has been identified and the product is not going to be over regulated!
James
