Default Compact Laser Projector Case -Coming Soon-

    Hello all,

There were some requests to produce and sell a case similar to the enclosures I featured at SELEM last month, so the design was improved and this is the result:

I would like to hear your input before a run of these is produced, in case I missed something. The price point is around $200 at quantity one. All case parts will be CNC-machined and the panels will be CNC-punched, ground for proper texture, and anodized black. Both possible optical surfaces (top of the middle plate or bottom of the top plate, for an inverted optical deck) will be precision-ground flat to .003" tolerance.

Prior to ordering, blueprints will be available for planning component locations and custom CNC work will be available for a fee if one wishes to have the optical or lower deck drilled, milled, or tapped to certain specs.

These enclosures are designed to put up with a good deal of abuse and two can fit into a standard carry-on suitcase, as the prototypes have a few times already. The cases are OEM and carry no certifications as they are considered a kit and will be shipped disassembled and flat-packed. All cutouts, except the power switch, which will be included, will accept standard fans and hardware.

    Tell me what you think!

Why don't you add 2 x RJ45 sockets (Neutrik XLR style) so you can run 2 x CAT5 cables for the ILDA input?

I also use CAT5/RJ45 for my Interlock cables... Easy, cheap.

    Otherwise, looking good.

    Okey-dok..

    a) Consider offering an 'option' / version of the rear-plate for a 'Neutrik' power-plug, http://www.neutrik.com/website/uploa...4mp-st.jpg?v=1 which seems to quickly (imho..) becoming the choice for PJ-power vs the old-skool / more 'accidentally-yankable IEC's.. and, as the US-Regs are becoming more 'harmonized' with the IEC-standard / Euro-regs, this should not cause much 'concern' to the FDA, easing any 'worries' that US-certifiers of these-boxes might-have, relative to integrating those puppies...

    b) Also, consider an option / version of the rear-plate for those that might also want to integrate either an FB3 or an Etherdream (..therefore, spot for an 'Ethercon' connctr.. http://sigma.octopart.com/13128814/i...8FDV-Y110B.jpg ).. just a thought..

    c) Is this intended for multi-line sources? (ie: RGB, etc...) If-so, consider making it as easy as-possible for 'convergence-adjustment access' - either a hinged, or easily-removable (yet, secureable, of course..) top-plate.. Sure, if peeps choose to use 'vertical-drive' adjusters, and make their own 'top-side access-ports', according to their layouts, etc, that's up to them.. but, for those preferring the 'typical' MM-1 adjusters, at least, if the top is 'slideable' or hinged / etc, etc, well then I am sure those peeps will be very-thankful they can get convergence done, w/O removing a buncha screws. Unless, something like this 'feature' is already-integrated, and I am just not seeing it (?)

    d) The biggest question - How is heat proposed to-be removed from the base-plate, there? Presumably, all the laser-heads are 'bolted' to that, ya? So, what about a 'ducting-layer', where a heatsink could be attached to the bottom of the BP, and, via 'intake ports' / slot in the front, and mini-fan (ie: quieter-versions of the 'c@sio 445-block' fans..) spots, in the rear, to help 'suck-away' the heat from the baseplate / heat-sink 'sandwich'...

..Yes, I know - 'that's the way @rctos does-it..' etc, well.. same w/ the Melles green-heads, and, ie: higher-power China-greens, etc, etc.. I've also recently had the 'joy' of using Kvant's newest-gen 20W RGB projectors, and that's (pretty-much..) what they are doing, now.. They're really well-designed / much-improved over previous-gen designs.. So, clearly there's a 'field-tested / proven precedent' for that technique.. Sure, this might result in a 'higher-cost version', but, certainly, there will-be some that will desire such 'hi-efficiency design-features', ya? I sure would...

..Just some füd for thought.. Feel free to tell me to go piss up a rope, too..
    ciao..

Thanks! There is some room for that I suppose but then I'd feel compelled to include the needed wiring etc. However, the idea to do an ATX-style plate on the back with multiple configurations has been brought up on the IRC chat a couple of times already, so I'll definitely look into that.

    Dimensions?

I'm interested, would like to consider this for a studio RGB. I too share Jon's concerns over heatsinking. Fins/fan(s) on the top would be a nice addition. The inverted optical deck is a nice approach.

    Looking good!

What he said about dimensions, but ill TEC cool the baseplate so I have no worries there.
Edit. I just read two could fit in a carry on bag, guessing this would be two small any thoughts on also offering it I a double size that would still fit a carry on but have an optical deck twice the size.

Dimensions are 8x9x8 on this model. I'll look into heat sink stock for the top plate. There has been interest in this.

There's a larger model that will be maximum carry-on size, based on my previous case I used to house my Melles Griot. It will be shorter and longer so one won't have to expand their suitcase with that zipper section or remove the extending suitcase handle as I had to, to fit the original one. Not sure of the dimensions off the top of my head, but it's in the works. I'll post some info about that in the next few days.

Looking good indeed-- nice that you took into consideration the size limits on carry-on baggage- hope they never change those. good price point also.. hk
