    Default UV Cure Glue

seen some new(ish) uv cure glue around ebay of recent so thought id give it a go.

    got this stuff

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1309908231...84.m1497.l2649

now he uses what looks like a proper UV light to cure, ive tried a 405nm pointer and 445nm pointer both do nothing to the glue. it does not cure in the slightest.

    so my findings, its poo

going to try a few others floating round ebay see what results I get

KOA 300 made by kemxert is THE BEST UV glue I've ever used. I swear by it! It's kind of pricy but worth every penny. Cures rapidly at 320-380nm. Totally rocks for glass and mirrors. I'm still on the same 1 oz. bottle I bought in 2008!

Thanks, I've been wondering about this for a while. All I knew is that a dentist uses some awesome blue-light cured stuff, but not what it was, or the price, or where to get it. One thing: What's it like if you want to redo it? If it's anything like the stuff my incisor crown is fitted with, then it's going to be like Torrseal, not much short of a jackhammer is going to get it off. If I can get a fast glue I can cure with a Bluray writer 405 nm diode, that is strong and rigid but not too brittle, but can be removed by tweaking it off with a jeweller's screwdriver tip without damaging fragile optics, and perhaps will clean up totally with an acetone wipe, then that might be an ideal. But do these glue types satisfy enough of those wants?

The best stuff I have found is called Holdtite UV188. A few people used some at the recent UKLEM and it seems to work fine. A little heat and it can easily be broken. It was quite expensive, I think 50ml cost me around £35, but you only use a tiny amount, so not too much per optic or mirror.

Thanks, that sounds good. Strictly UV though, or blue-light too? I could go looking, but if people post the Vitalstatistix of glues they use here this might become a great reference thread. Also, any info about shelf life can be useful. Expensive stuff not-often-used makes that parameter one of the most important. Anyway, reduction of bond by heat is nice. Sounds a bit like an epoxy. Another useful info here would be cheap sources of light that does work.

The adhesive was being cured by 405nm diodes at the LEM. I am not sure about shelf life, will have to ask a shelf lol. But seriously I think this is quite long as I did have a bottle of a similar adhesive which lasted about 10 years and it does come in a very thick black plastic bottle. The contact details of the manufacturer in the Uk is

    www.scigrip.com, telephone 0191 419 6444

The KOA300 has a rated shelf life of 1 year, but my 5-year-old bottle still works great! It's been stored in a cool, dark container for most of its life.

As for cheap sources of light for curing UV glue, you absolutely can't do any better than THE SUN

My shelves are most excellent, they live long and they prosper, but sadly they have no room for a sun small enough to take out conveniently during night work.

Seriously though, if I can point a small UV LED or 405nm LD, so much the better, that way I can selectively cure one bit at a time without awkward masking. 10-year life will be excellent, I'd be ok with less. (And have mastered the black arts of keeping superglue viable for years too).

Scigrip looks interesting, but when I click the 'distributors' link they appear to want name, rank, serial number, and probably my mother's maiden name and records in triplicate of any deals she may or may not have made with the devil. There has GOT to be an easier way to buy this stuff...

    Edit:
I found http://www.multibondsolutions.co.uk/...product_id=163 but they say 'call for pricing' and appear to require a signed up account in order to buy.. Is there ANY way to buy this stuff that doesn't involve weird negotiations of price, and the seller aiming to get as much info out of (or grip on) the buyer as possible? What are they all afraid of? Does the stuff have use to a terrorist? The restrictions on access seem to all but demand govt or military passes.

dental cure is 460nm. I tried to market an led based system for this when they first came out. You need a 5w led. Argon laser works well too.
