Default Pangolin Beyond Webinar - AKA on1 feature Swami's going to orgasm!

I joined the Pangolin Webinar this afternoon which basically gave an overview of Beyond (soon to be on Youtube).

However, despite being an overview, it was still very useful with a host of features showcased that have recently been added / I didn't know even existed, so well worthwhile.

I took a few brief notes which I'll list below but there's something of particular interest to many on here who do abstracts which I'm going to list at 2:

    1. Input recording - A long time ago I suggested that for complex movement in Beyond it would be really useful to be able to record complex movement rather than have to create it using effects. This has now been implemented in 2 ways, one of which I never saw coming! The 1st is for a simple line drawing, you can now activate a special type of cursor, draw a line freehand in any path you want, no matter how complex or convoluted and then click save. The drawing action is then saved just as if it was recorded by video and when played back the cue plays back the line as its drawn out like a tracing. It seemed that as more was drawn the older stuff trailing behind also disappeared (I'm guessing there are probably settings related to this and how much is left / erased). You can then apply the affects to the drawing. So its now possible to trace an impossibly complex path and have it play back as a cue.

The 2nd thing I didn't know about or see coming is Kaledioscope!

    2. kaleidoscope - This is going to make Swami orgasm! Imagine the most complex abstract you've ever seen Swami do, then times it by many many times! Yep as the name suggests what this function does it create a kaleidoscope image. Now the really clever part is you can activate recording as above and as you make mouse movements, the effect is the same as twisting the barrel on a real kaleidoscope - ie, the pattern morphs and changes as do the colours with a complexity that you could probably never replicate with effects. What's more, you can record this movement as in 1. above using Input Recording. So you start the kaleidoscope, morph through all of the changes and transitions you want and then click save. Once more as above, the whole thing is saved into a cue just as if it were a video recording of all of the movement and yet it is a cue! No need for animation or effects, its all done for you. Further more, despite seeing something that was so complex it literally filled the whole screen (slightly less successful settings on this one), the point handling was very clever as it was projected live and never flickered once on the laser (unsure what scanners were involved). Suffice to say, I've never seen anything as complex successfully displayed before without flicker or problems scanning.

You really need to see the Youtube video to believe this one.

    3. Transitions - Something I asked for some while ago, transitions are now available on the time line and can be placed between cues to allow various different types of morphing

    4. Time line - effects can be placed within each other to allow layering

    5. Key Resolution on Time line now less than 1ms

    6. Time line now has dynamic snap lines which appear allow you to drag multiple cues together and then disappear once more plus ordinary magnetic snap line markers (which have been around for a while) as well

    7. Security for Shows - new feature for distributing shows that allows you to tie playback to someone's FB / QM serial number to prevent further distribution. Prevents piracy of sold shows as you can now tie it to the serial number of the purchaser.

    8. Master live control sliders added in 1 place for Volume, Speed ect

    9. Creation of Chases etc using Effects Properties which can now be saved as QuickFX into the QuickFX table

    10. New Power Effect added to show creating that allows you to control laser power on a point by point basis, by section, by repeat etc within a shape. This isn't the same as adding brightness effects. You can literally set the power level to different parts of the cue at the level you choose.

    11. Abstract Editor - can now edit the waveform in every effect generator independently not only on wave type but totally freeform ie you can add drag handles and distort the waveform in any way you want

    12. Freeform mesh in Zones for all in one fast zone correction.

    13. Frequency modulation in Abstract Editor - can now control not only the waveform but set max and min values

    14. Advanced Zoning Feature - can now cut zones down in size and assign to parts to different projectors so eg 1 projector could draw 1 half a cue and a 2nd projector draw the other half.

    15. Greater Key Effects control - when you stretch a cue you can now choose whether or not the key position stretches with the cue or stays where it is and with effects whether or not the effect repeats or stretches in length.

16 Better sound control - sound reaction is now available within cue element editors and works with great accuracy so you can make an element within a cue eg a circle jump in reaction to the music. When added to the channel, this overrides any effects in the cue. However, this can also be tied to a slider which at the one end is sound reactive and the other effect reactive with a blend of both in between in varying degrees so with a slide of the slider you can take a cue from being sound reactive to effects ie time / beat based reactive or to any point in between.

There's probably other stuff as well but these were just a few quick notes.

    Overall, some amazing new features.

He saw most of that at Selem. Sp did i. Beyond is worth buying. Steep but intuitive learning curve though. Reason being too many cool features to use.

I guess you guys get to see somethings 1st being next door to pangolin.

I knew of a few features but some others such as Kaleidoscope were a surprise.

There are many cool features, in fact I left the webinar definitely thinking this is the most complete and powerful software I've ever seen, and that's not a fanboy view but a genuine opinion taking a step back from all loyalties.

Equally I think Beyond though is just what you make of it. Its easy to use if you want it to be. You can use it like QS all day long just as easily. If you choose however to dig deeply and use advanced features then it can really blow your mind and open up whole new realms of control possibilities. Its like a candy store, you can stop and buy the fruit salad and feel satisfied or get adventurous and delve into the pick and mix, your choice!

I set up my video camera and recorded it since I was busy with work so, I'm anxious to watch it even though I too, saw much of that at SELEM. But, the one thing that struck me was, they said it was going to be presented in English. No offense to Alexey but, such a heavy accent for a webinar made just the little bit I saw very, very tedious to follow. It's going to be hard to sit and watch.

I really wouldn't know what they have planned, that's one for Bill. However given the age of the QM, even though its still very capable, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was replaced at some point.

Yeah Pangolin announced they are going to put it on their Youtube channel.

They've also announced they're going to now run a series of webinars targeted at specific skill levels and maybe specific areas of Beyond eg scripting.

That kaleidoscope feature looks just amazing, just what I've been waiting for. I can't find it in build 580, so I'm thinking it's new to 588. Hopefully they'll release it soon.

I have not had an opportunity to play with beyond, but bill's preview was quite interesting.

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.
