    Default 300mW 650nm red laser

    I saw this on eBay : http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...8624&rd=1&rd=1

    I asked the seller, he can have an analog modulation version but he has to ask the manufacturer before.
    Seems to have good specs and a reasonnable price, what are you thinking of it? Who is the manufacturer?
    It seems to be the driver from CNI, MRL model (http://www.cnilaser.com/word/MRL-660%20ok.doc), but the specs and the laser head are different (better than CNI).

    I sure that is CNI laser.
    The model is :MRL,that is CNI mark.
    But I never hear that be able to change analog.
    Price is not very good.

    I wait the final answer for the modulation.
    But CNI does not sell 650nm, they only have 635 or 660nm!

    About the price, where do you see a 300mW for less that that?

    650 nm from a DPSS? 671 nm, sure, but is 650 a standard for DPSS?
    As for the price, if it's for real, it is a good price. That would be a VERY cheap price even for the common 532 nm green, new at 300 mW, let alone something unusual and harder to make.

    And as for the 635 or 660 nm types mentioned by sbk above, those would definitely NOT be DPSS at all, but just collimated diode outputs. I suspect that 650 won't be DPSS either, but TEC and 658 nm to shorten the wavelength and boost tolerance to overdrive.

    Yes it's a laser diode, not a DPSS. There is a fault in the description (hum, strange...).
    I don't think that RED lasers are more difficult to build that a DPSS green, there is only a laser diode and optics for the red... Only hard to do if you combine multiple red beams for more power.

    Which you probably would have to do to get 300 mW. Either you mix beams with an expensive beamsplitter cube and double all your optics, mounts, and drivers, OR you start with multimode, and use even more expensive optics and accept poor beam quality. To get 650 nm at that power almost certainly means peltier cooling is used, and managing that alone can cost the entire asking price of that laser. Try it, figuring out access for adjustment/repair while keeping the water vapour out. It will bake anyone's noodle trying to work out good solutions to these problems.

    There's nothing like trying to build a laser, ANY laser, for a HARD reality check in what they're really worth. The only way to do this cheaply with one-off parts supplies is to buy one ready made, cheaply, then take it apart and make another from the parts, which unless you want some hardcore education, is a fairly pointless activity.

    that without a doubt will be a multimode diode. I suspect the specs he lists are a little flattering...

    The mode isn't specified...
    In facts if the specs are right, it's a top red laser for the price. But I can doubt...

    Dave, your LE660-250 has TEC cooling, can't you try to have 650nm by cooling a little more?

    Exactly. If it was single mode (is best for sharp, narrow well collimated beams), it would also be TEM00, and the seller would be boasting high wide and plentiful. Even if it was single mode pairs combined by beamsplitter, there'd be some boasting, and some better beam specs probably, like maybe <2mm at aperture and <0.5 mr divergence.

    Further, 650 nm is not available at low cost for such combination, you'd have to use TEC's to do it, and the difficulty would drive the price up. 650 nm at 300 mW IS had for a low enough price in multimode (check Roithner) in small quantites, so it's almost certain that that's how that laser was made.


    DPSS has become a silly buzzword to some people, an eyecatchinging maneouvre made by people with more knowledge that those they hope to fool. It annoys me. I think the misuse of the term arose two ways, partly because people started looking for DPSS, and partly because about the ONLY other thing that eBay will show you if you look for DPSS, is an IBM hard drive, so it's easy to get relevant results. People stuffed it into their title line, and the bad habit spread to the point where it almost becomes a lie, at times.



    Dave, would the answer to sbk's question be: "no, unless more sealing is made to prevent water condensation icing up the light path?"

    Not sure eh! Arctos do it with their reds, and condensation isn't a issue there..
