Default Electronics Experts - Car remote key fob

I wont bore the forum with the story, just go with it ok

Nissan want about £200 for a new remote key fob for the wifes micra, me being ahead of the game purchased a second hand one on ebay with a plan to just get it reprogramed. but apparently they can only be programmed once, so you have to buy a new blank one from Nissan which they will then code for you.

the one I purchased on ebay cost me like £15-20, so if a break it, it doesn't matter as I cant use it anyway.

I noticed on ebay you can buy new/blank transponders

but the numbers on the chip aren't the same as the key fob

is there a way to find out if they are the same chips?

I got hit for 600$ in keys when I bought a 1 year old ex rental fleet beauty. 150$ for the keys and the rest for having them programmed by a locksmith.

I ended up paying 150$ for two when another dealer's technician admitted the keys will self clone by sticking a blank key in the ignition after turning the master key to "on", then sticking in the blank key, turning to "on" while pressing the brake pedal three times. That I did not need to take the key to the locksmith with the special transponder reader.

I don't know about your Nissan, but my Ford had a nice way around the problem.

My bet is you can find a cloning key somewhere. Do some digging in a Nissan forum.

Have you spoken to an actual independent auto locksmith to find out how they can be re-programmed, or just Nissan?

Do you have one or more spare keys or even the original one? not sure if this is a loss, or if the original one has broken/stopped working somehow.

On some cars the electronics for operating the remote are separate from the transponder that unlocks the immobiliser, so you can just replace the remote part, and switch over the transponder chip from the old key (if you still have it)

You've not mentioned which year of Micra Andy, care to clarify?

Anyway, a bit of Googling has turned up that the key is tied to the ECU. Nissan hold a database of all the NATS codes, so you need to go to them so they can find out the super-sekrit code of your ECU, in order to reprogram your key transponder. They do this specifically to stop unscrupulous folks in the auto key trade from helping out car ringers.

You can get a device to reprogram both your ECU and key to the same code, but it looks like a faff, and end up quite expensive still, and if yours is the square shape key, it looks like they are a 'one shot' deal on the programming too.

So, the key fob you have bought off ebay will work if you fit a fresh transponder chip to the board (if its a K12) and then go to your Nissan dealer for the reprogram. cheaper than brand new, but no getting away from the fact you need to pay for the Nissan work.

    Nissan And Chrysler's,
both require NEW transponders (you can NOT re-flash used ones).
Nissan does require a key transponder Programmer unfortunately, and so does Chrysler.

GM and Ford will allow you to "add" an additional key transponder if you allready have 1 programmed .

so basically, you will need a new key and a locksmith to programm it.

Not quite. He needs a brand new transponder chip, someone to solder it to the key fob, and what sounds like 'Nissan only' to do the reprogram.

well, this is the way we do it at a dealer repair shop,
as far as breaking down chip components on the actual key fob, well i really dont think it is worth your time, it will probably just come out to the same price in the end...
