I should have never said that, LMAO. Its major work, all day long work. Then you gotta find a pig, need a fridge, or huge cooler to keep the pig in over night, have to rent a spit, have to truck the spit because it doesnt fit in the trunk of my Accord, shop for supplies, ect, ect, ect. It could end up costing well over $600, not including charcoal, sauces, sides, ice, drinks, ect. The pig is about $3.50 a pound, hung weight. Average pig is 180lbs dressed. Then there is usually a slaughter fee too. So you can do the math. Thats not including spit rental, time, and gas running around. For under 20 people its not that practical. The last one we did was for a block party, and everyone chipped in one way or another.

I'll do it, but I cant cover the cost, and I'll need help. We also need someone to pick up, and drop off the spit, and the pig.

What I would do is just grill up some homemade sausage, with peppers/onions, marinated steak tips, and chicken. Use sandwich rolls, and have some marinated olives, stuffed cherry peppers, potato, and garden salads, watermelon, and/or whatever you like. It would be easier, cheaper, and we can cook in batches when we are hungry. Plus have a variety.

I'll do either. So you guys can decide what you want to do.

I want the pig! But, well... if there will be only a dozen people then maybe a compromise is in order. However if this grows to a crowd then I want the pig.

$3.50/Lb hung???? Really? You guys need to come to the dirty south. Convert thy selves. Pig is cheap here (or we got a favor). Last whole hog we did was ~1.00/lb

I got 'a plan... I also have this image; when the state police stops your vehicle and sees the dead hog in the back with a couple of high power laser projectors you just need to convince him your have some relationship with the military and you are definitely NOT on your way to Boston Harbor to attend a "party".

Guys- I can get half a pig with no problem--my brother from upstate NY has contacts in the farming community. To roast the pig, you dig a pit, make a fire in the pit, show lasers beams through the smoke in the pit, then when the fire is down to charcoal, start laying down wet burlap bags. You then wrap the pig in wet sheets and burlap, place the pig in the hole, and then cover it up. Next day, about the time you want to eat (suppertime), you dig out the pig, un wrap it and PRESTO! roast pig. Top it off with a keg of beer from the local brewery and you have a REAL party. I guess we should call this NEWLEM II pig roast and laser party.

Sounds like a plan!!!! You're a one stop party brother. Man after my own heart.

I was thinking we could smoke a few shoulders, but your plan sounds much better. We can do BBQ sides, beans, cornbread, corn, watermelon, ect.

Last whole hog I did was in the ground too - we used banana leaves, lots of them. Can't fit a whole on my smoker. ~70 lbs of shoulder/butts is all mine will hold 'till i get a bigger rig. Mystrys and I cooked the pork for SELEM for a couple years. It would be really great to cook on-site instead. That's the problem with this hobby; I can't afford a big smoker since they are about the price of a decent projector. That's the question: food or light. Both are required for life as we know it.

As for pork prices... It helps to live in the country where many folks keep hogs. I couldn't get that price everyday, had to call in a favor.

Now that that's settled. Back to the main topic...the beer. We should avoid the "keg'a Bud". It should actually be beer and be worth the trip. Something local and handcrafted and maybe hard to get. Hard liqueur should be limited...to single malt or exotic like moonshine, real moonshine as in illegal to transport across state lines (just kidding...of course). 30,000 FT^2 and who knows how many lasers.

Fearless, you're a wizard at gadgetry. How about a contest? A small drone(s) or electric vehicle and "targeted beams" from various projectors; auto targeting vs manual and a door price for the most hits.
