I am a hobbiest with the very same itch to do shows. It's very unfortunate we just happen to live in one of the most strict states when it comes to that sort of thing. So therefore I was also considering the LSO training down south, but that's just the first step. From what I've gathered you'll also need to jump several other NYS hurtles. A year of practice in the field, a variance, and each projector has to be safe and registered with the state for a fee. There's more but that's where I always find myself getting discouraged. I mean there's nobody even near me to work under to even gain the experiance so I'm stuck. NY$ is all about their $MONEY$. I'm all about the LASERBEA//||\\s. Suggesting I may make a move to say, Colorado (where they don't have any such laws, just the variance) before I attempt 'public' shows. It's rough man.

New York is definitely among the strictest states (along with Arizona, which ironically is the other state I want to be able to do laser shows) but I don't believe it is quite as difficult as it appears to be. Here is a link to the application for a certificate of competence needed in NY ( https://www.labor.ny.gov/formsdocs/w...elasercert.pdf ). About halfway down it lists the requirements but just below the requirement for 1 year of experience in the field is a note saying that the commissioner can waive the 1 year experience requirement if the applicant can show proof of successfully completing a laser operator training course. I think as long as you complete a training course you should be alright... I hope anyway. That's what I'm banking on. It may not be a bad idea to start work outside of the state first but I think the LSO course is still a necessity even if it's just for my own edification.

Right on. That is a fact I totally forgot about. And yes, the education would be very beneficial. You might have yourself some carpool company come time for the 2015 class. Even the NELEM as you probably take 90 through Albany to get to mass. Cool beans.

yes the 1 year may be waived but the course needs to be an approved nys course then you must take and pass the test given by nys (not the company giving the course )

on the test is a lot of ny specific law questions and a lot of outdated questions about old gear, math math math lots of math and biology

Do you have a link of anything specific I can look over and study for that. I'm sure I've been given a link before. It's hard for me to keep track.

Yeah, I had been looking for some type of example test so I would know what to expect but I haven't found anything. I know the LSO training course goes over a lot of the math and biology so I'm hoping it would prepare me well for the test. I'll have to continue reading up on NYS regulations. I'm also hoping that the course offered at SELEM would be approved by NYS since it is hosted by ILDA (The course I mean, not SELEM itself). I started looking into courses offered in NYS but I didnt find much current info. A lot of it seemed outdated. I'll have to keep looking.

As far as NELEM, I'm guessing I would be taking 90 through Albany as well. I'd definitely be willing to carpool the rest of the way. It would certainly save a bit on gas for both of us.

The ilda LSO class is sufficient for az, but not ny.
suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

This May or may not be the form ZeroPoint was talking about. I found it upon searching Mr. Ballads name. After reading the entire form, I saw the last page where it lists people and places for laser classes. Apparently there's one held at HVCC in Troy. That's wild because I went to that college years ago and it's only 15 min away. Much more achievable than driving 3 hours one way to NYC for a 3 hour class, multiple times a week for multiple weeks. I may give Mr. Marotta a call next week.
