As you seem to be on a low budget there's no obvious solution to the grey issue. There are projectors that are very good at blacks but they cost around £3K UK so probably around $4.5-5K US.

Maybe your answer might be to hire a suitable video projector? The one Pangolin recommends for use with their Emulaser I believe is the Epsom Power Lite Home Cinema 5030 UBe (it's specially designed to give very black blacks).

There are also laser software solutions that are designed to simulate laser using video projection but these are expensive packages and are really designed with beam shows in mind.

I thought I would mention a 2D animation program I will be using to simulate the laser graphics. Synfig Studio is a free, open-source program for 2D animation for Windows, Linux, and Mac. Its main limitation until recently, was that lack of support for sound. But, it now includes sound, though it may not be a totally robust feature yet.

I will also mention that Blender, a 3D animation program has a tutorial on Youtube to create "Light streaks", which look somewhat like a comet following a curvy path. But, I decided against that approach, because the tutorial had many more steps for this than what the 2D program had. Here is the link to that Blender tutorial. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZudmvS8DJU .
