Ok, got around to measuring my blue beam (just the blue because its the biggest of the lot) and its 6.4mm wide by 4.2mm high.
There is slight spill on the width, but I'm going to re-do the knife edge on the module as it could be tighter.

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

Are the modifications to dt or scan pro etc drivers available somewhere?

One trick that was not mentioned is that you can re-orient the laser. I mean change the angle of it to be more favorable on entrance to the scanner mirrors. The X mirror could *easily* take a beam that is 6mm "wide" (if the width of the beam was oriented in line with the width of the X mirror).

The mod takes 4) 75K resistors, 1) 150K resistor and 1) 470pF capacitor. These are paralleled over existing components so no desoldering is needed. I'll gladly make it available to anyone who has SMT soldering skills.

Oh yea, and the mod would involve putting a different connector on the end of the scanner cable.

I had a thought. We keep trying to up the performance of our projectors with a linear approach ie brighter lasers and faster scanners. What about using a two stage scanning technique? The first stage uses the Saturn to scan a beam over say 5-6 degrees. Such a small angle allows higher speeds and/or optimizes aperture allowing lower divergence. Then as close as possible, the large 506 mirrors scan this high resolution field over a wide angle in X and Y. In its simplest form the software determines where on the 10 x 10 grid (for 60 degree scanning) to place the centroid of the Saturn scan field and the Saturn draws the content of the field. I think it would be easy (not trivial ) to optimize this interaction.

This is one of the ideas I would like to try for 360x180 degree dome scanning, using 2x scan sets back to back or indeed closer than back to back.

This has been done and is patented in Germany, the Horizant Scan projector was available for many years. What will strike many as odd is the accuracy required of the spinning 45' mirror that aims the beam out of the scan head. 10-12 Bits of resolution and good repeatability is needed for the course positioner for graphics.

The motion of the course positioner is such that you want to blank any graphics unless it is moving very slowly.

Pangolin Disco scan achieves the same effect using a lens.

There aren't any really good videos, but here's one with the projector on the floor (?) - usually you'd mount the projector on the ceiling with the discoscan pointing down:

correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the discoscan kind of mess with divergence? i think galvonaut is interested in projecting tight graphics/abstracts and not just beams.

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

Haha, yes, derailed :P Sorry Bill

As Swami (and Bill) have said, this lens really messes with divergence for graphics.

Didn't know you were after a graphics solution Keith.
