I never heard of PT-40! Anyway if it looks the same as any of the others in the doc, then the mods should also be similar. Anyway, sure, contact me by Skype. If I am available then I'll be happy to chat.
Frankly i,m a little suprised that you don,t keep track of what others are doing.....try staying awake behind your desk

Phenix technology have several scanners including the PT-A40 wich is the chinese version of the 506 it seems. They had those ready to ship as a set including amps after a month or so when the 506 was announced. Not sure how they perform but the price is very competitive. Hard to beat if you manufacture scanners in america with labour costs that are 5x as high compared to a chinese. Phenix is a division from eigtonlight. Here is the link for people that want to give them a try or contact Eightonlight.

I find it interesting that the picture shows one amp with the notch filter and the other amp without. Perhaps because one has half of a mirror? And why the half mirror? Shouldn't the X mirror be shorter and wider to accept a 3x5mm beam but keeping the intertia the same as the Y mirror instead of just cutting it in half? IDK, they may look shiny and have a ton of trimpots on the amp but I doubt the performance could even touch the 506. Quality-wise, my 506s, running on PT-20 amps, perform every bit as good as my DT-40s. My PT-40s (not the PT-A40s) , no matter how much I tweak the tuning, are left in the dust.

There's no doubt that the chinese glavos are getting better, but I own and have seen and played with the 506s, running fantastically on weak amps, and I am sold, 100%

    Bill,

I'm bridging in the 8th wire with a piece of mil-spec # 22 soldered to the shield of one of the cables. The cable shown without strain relief in the earlier picture is not representative of what I'm doing.

The majority will sacfrifice quallity for price. I have no doubt that the scannermax are better but if a chinese can do almost the same for 10usd cheaper the majority will go for the cheapest one. Stanwax had in the past several customers that went to china to save 5 bucks even he is arround the corner from them. With multimode it was exactly the same. Beamquality is sacrificed because the price mw/euro is better. With most people waving beams over the audience you don,t need a scanset that is super in performance. They will choose the cheapest one if it can do 30 or 40kpps. In another topic someone sugessted that comparing is done by the customer based on price and with scanners its the same. For example : Oh that one is 50 usd dollars cheaper and it says 30kpps on both datasheets, Oh then the seller must make more profit i guess so i will buy the chinese one. Even though he should go for the one that is 50usd more expencive, the average guy on PL is going for the cheapest one because its only a "hobby". At this moment OPT/laserworld sell a shitload of projector even though the quallity is not great. But people will continue to do shows for low money or buy it as a toy for their bedroom and try to save every buck they can.

The PT-40's are really nice inexpensive scanners from a price/performance standpoint I'll have some of the new wide angle ones in this week. I think it's their answer to the DT 40 wides. I too, am surprised Bill indicated he hadn't heard of them. Eventually I will move over to the 506's - that much is certain but, I'm really waiting for a "set" price, turnkey, glossy retail box product from Pangolin with I hope, the DSP amp. I find it admirable all the testing, tiny soldering requiring magnifiers, and in depth reviews being done by the hobbyist community to bring these to market.

    glossy retail box product
I'd rather have it in an antistatic bag and foam and save a few quid

Edison, perhaps you could have a thread with your standard response in it about people only wanting cheap, not charging enough for shows, etc, etc and simply link to it each time the occasion demands it. We could save on some 'thread inches' then... The way its going, people might start thinking you've got a chip on your shoulder about it.

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

Yeah i think that,s the key, a drop in solution. As soon as they have production up and running including amps then more people want to test them i,m sure..... But i also know that development takes time to do things right. It also depends on how much you can spend on development of course. Things would go allot faster if had 10 people on my payrol list

Haha well i,m just display the facts and as long as people are complaining i have to shine some light on the real problem. I made allot of super good deals to get them more power etc just to help them out. The begged if they could have a better price and after 3 years of doing lasershows the majority is on the same level. Why? because people continiue to see things as a hobby. People complain that things are too expencive and don,t want to admit that the real problem is on their side. As long as people "see " things as a hobby everything will be expencive. More cashflow means that people can afford better equipment and Pangolin aswell as others have more margin in making the perfect scanners ( to stay within the thread subject ) That would mean everyone would bennefit in the end. Its also allot more fun when you actually get a good payment for doing a show

    The truth hurts i know.....

    Edison,

Thanks for the links to the phenixtechnology site. The one model that intrigues me is the 10mm aperture scanner set. This is simply not available anywhere else unless you want to go to the industrial market. I have one of the older EMS 9.5mm aperture sets that runs up to 18k with little distortion on 35 x 25 degree projections. I wonder how these compare. I really do! Have you seen these?

To be fair, the 506's that I have tested have been equipped with larger mirrors (8.6mm minor axis) and unlike the 7mm mirrors on my DTs and PTs, these really do not vignette a 5mm square beam. Something that maybe not everyone is aware of is that vignetting is much more detrimental than it might seem. Sure, if you clip 15% off the diameter of the beam at certain scan angles the power will drop proportionally, but beam divergence is proportional to the diameter of the beam and so the beam will diverge 15% faster (I've measured this and you can test this too pretty easily) and... the 15% lost will preferentially scatter around the region of the projected beam reducing the contrast as well.

I agree with Bradfo, that although working with Pangolin to improve and fine tune these scanners is enjoyable. I can't wait for the shiny box with the digital amps and an easy to read single language manual (personal pet peeve).

I don't know about you Gents, but I'll gladly pay 40$ more for the sealed, ceramic, long life bearings on the 506.
That is dinner for one or two at the local Mexican restaurant, or a half of a tank of Gasoline... I would prefer no glossy box.

Now if Bill would just include LabSnacks boxes like Thorlabs.....

    https://www.google.com/search?q=labs...ed=0CCgQ9QEwAQ

Those boxes are probably the most brilliant marketing idea for lab gear ever conceived.

My son runs Tech Ingredients and ships/sells computer hardware. He always opened my Thorlabs boxes and left me the optics and the pretzels...now HE ships out snacks with the hard drives! We were rolling on the floor a few months ago thinking of all the weird crap that you could conceivably include with these orders to enhance sales.

The glossy box is symbolic. When you're at that stage, hopefully we have an integrated product.

    Ditto on the bearings!
