    I think that laser fx web page shows how to make a hazer out of an old coffee urn heater and some other oddball parts. You should be able to make of for under $100. I can see how it could be unsafe if used carelessly but if you just want something to play with in your garage it would be a nice project. I might try to make one but I am in no hurry since I already have a fog machine.

    ok,don't laugh but i use an american dj "cold"oil based hazer and it sells new for 399$ american.
    it is like a pale imitation of a df 50.
    still,it works great in a smaller venue and is less noticable than the output from a df50.
    i use it in conjunction with a mini fogger with a clip on fan to diffuse fog up to the ceiling in short bursts.
    this keeps the initial,thicker burst of fog off the dancers and helps keep the fog airborne a little longer
