Oh yeah and they loop the fiber into a coil to conserve space i guess--
I suppose it doesnt mind being looped, being a light conduit..
Ill try to find the opto-schematic i found a few days ago and post it>
I believe retail on the tapered fiber is only about $3-5k... If you add a nice surplus pump system for $20k, then you could build this (to professional specs) at home for $25k-ish... If you're not picky about the output, then I'd guess homebuilt for $10k...
umm...
as sexy as it looks through a diffraction grating...
How the fuck would you modulate that ? I mean, with current technologies, how would you achieve pcaom like performance, with access to all of the wavelengths...
Now proudly stocking and offering the best deals on laser-wave
Ailii--I guess you'd do the same way as a high power white-light mixed gas laser. Prism and pick? The only thing is I dont know if this is a CW or pulsed. Maybe not ok for high speed graphics.
Yadda--Price quote from Sumita's fiber:

SUMITA OPTICAL GLASS, INC.
360usd for their type- not too bad, maybe more $$for others.

Don't know,
Don't know and..
Don't know.
I wish I knew.
I wish I was an optical engineer so I'd know what the hell I was reading in all these pages on optical fibers and upconverting and downconverting. This is isn't going to be easy. Oh, and that little beauty-- probably have to
DIY.. I doubt if it comes pre-assembled . That would just add to the cost I'm sure anyway. I now know that a Ti:sapphire pump laser is definately out $$$..
learning as we go...
Is there a fiber expert in the house???
Added info 3/6:---------------
I believe this is a university project.
That pic is out of their gallery: http://www.iap.uni-jena.de/info/index.html
It may a one-of-a-kind:/
