    Default Scanners for The Doctor...

    Hi all,

The Doctor didn't put me up to this, and I'm sure he'll be surprised to see this thread but...

I just learned that he doesn't have any scanners presently (and only had crappy ones in the past from what I gather...)

If anyone out there has a set of Chinese scanners that they were going to throw away, or only the amps -- practically any amps, I'll pay to have them sent to Pangolin and then I'll pair the amps with a set of our '506 scanners and then ship the whole thing to The Doctor.

By the way, Doc is not a Pangolin user, and has been somewhat critical of us in the past. Not necessarily a fan, so that's not why I'm doing this. I was just amazed to learn that someone who is so active on PL for so long doesn't even have a rig...

Let me know if anyone has something they could spare and we'll collectively cobble something together for the guy.

Yep, it was quite the double-take. I'm willing to pay too, though I have to save a bit after the next bills are paid. I want to try the 506 with the best position sensor so I expect to pay. Just not sure what that will be yet. On the other hand I won't refuse help. Anything that gives me a good experience that lets me put that Widemove sticky-hysteresis problem well behind me will be more than welcome. it will also mean there's more experience behind my postings.

I have a set of camtech CB6580's sitting here. PM if interested. Also have a set of the newer cambridge surface mount amps. Not sure of the model number at the moment. I think the output amps are bad. Not sure if that is something you want to mess with?

Cambridge amps sound entirely awesome to me. I'll defer to Bill though, for judgement on coupling amps and scanners.

The older ones would be easier to deal with, although as Norty can attest, we have SMT parts in stock and SMT surface mount soldering equipment and skills ;-) I'll write to you Woddy!

Old is good, especially if I overdrive it somehow and need to repair. SMT looks great until I need to solder it...

The only difficulty I could imagine with the "old" as opposed to "new" (and possibly even on the "new" depending on the cables) is that the Compact 506 uses a pretty small connector, and the diameter of the wires that can be captured by the connector is also pretty small. This was not a problem in the case of Norty's amps because fortunately, the Chinese scanners used small wires (probably for economy's sake). I found it impossible to use larger wires on cables that O. Steven Roberts initially sent with his Turbo Tracks...

But anyway, we'll see what the community has available, and then work with that.

    Go Doc!

Nice gesture Bill. Looking forward to the Doc's review also.

God knows why he doesn't have a set of scanners
He has thousands of dollars worth of lens ,diodes ,diode mounts
And a ton of other bits,
Why no scan set doc ??

When God said “Let there be light” he surely must have meant perfectly coherent light.

I intended to build lasers to fund other laser stuff, and quit that when it looked like getting me into months of work and debt to compete with people who could do better anyway. It was a bad decision because it relied on too much stuff I couldn't make myself. It was never 'thousands' of dollars, just hundreds, and I don't have the stuff now, and what happened to it is my business, not anyone else's. As to why no scanners, I mentioned for years the trouble I had with WideMoves, you could have seen that any time if you wanted, and known why I wasn't willing to buy scanners again unless I could be sure of eliminating a problem. I also expect to pay for scanners like anything else I get, as I have said three times in two days, usually to try to get some idea of the price so I could plan to meet it! Bill's gesture is new and surprising. I have no idea what will happen next now. All I know is that if I am in any way going to be helped then I'd be a fool to stand in the way of it. A few days ago I didn't even know I'd be posting here again! I just found I couldn't face coding intensively, alone, like I did last year for many months, so there it is. If some helpful turn of fate or human kindness changes my motivation that could be a good thing. One reason I don't get into all the scanning and shows discussion is simple: I have no stake there. I might have more useful stuff to say if I did.
