    Longevity ultimately becomes the issue with anything over the rated output. You can drive them harder, but you'll be sacrificing life expectancy if you're not TECing them. Not so bad when the diodes are only $100 a piece, but then you're having to deal with the possibility of failure mid-show.

    I wonder how much the tighter beam contributes to the brightness. When 642 first appeared the brightness increase was in quite a large way attributed to the tighter beam.
    It would be interesting to see a 9mm and 450 running the same power side by side to see if the better beam makes it appear much more bright.

    I currently drive the P73s at 1.4A but keep them tec'd at 55 degrees.

    Thanks PB, that was my next question (getting back on topic ) Who's driving the P73 at what current at an ambient temp of about 70°F/21°C ? 1A? 1.1A? 1.2A ?

    I had a similar thought about beam width awhile back. I postulated that a m140 with an olike 8 mm 3 element lens should look brighter when doing a horizontal sheet type effect if the diode was oriented so the far field spot was like -. Given the ratio of the spot is around 10-14 to 1 it seems logical it would make a huge difference. So, I set up two identical projectors with the diodes set like - and l. At distances under 50 feet its really hard to tell the difference. Even at 100 feet the difference is not as noticeable as you would think. I don't think the brightness relationship is linear for beam effects like it is for graphics. Anyone else experimented with this?

    a choice between the 9mm or the better beam (?) of the Osram 450. Anybody got side-by-side comparisons? I looked at 445/450 side by side once a while back and didn't see any real brightness or color difference..
    I put a m140 and osram 1.4w side by side and couldn't tell the difference in color or brightness. The osram did have a smaller raw divergence.
