    Default My neighbours

So, my neighbour turned 30 this year, and celebrated with a rainbow in the sky.

My neighbours are IMEC, the Interuniversity MicroElectronics Centre, which was founded in 1984. Their facility is right next to my dorm. Quite nice to have such an installation right next to you

I have to say though, the blue is *very* fat, the cyan looks a bit misaligned, and not sure if there was supposed to be yellow but there were two oranges. Were, as one (the "yellow") suddenly disappeared.

Here's a blurrier pic, showing all the lines (distance about half a km).

According to the news, up to 60 km in ideal weather conditions.

When taking the pictures, some guy was jogging by and asked, "What are you loo- WHOA!"
Facebook is filled with people wondering about the sudden gayness increase of the sky.

Here's a web page with some more information about the setup. Each line is about 10 to 25 W, with a total power of 100 W.

I have never heard of MOPA before...

For the 'original' gig, they were (for a few of the lines..) Big Badass Ions.. ..here's where we first 'guessed it'.. http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...903#post134903 ..then it was 'confirmed', by one of the Techs (?) here: http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...090#post135090 ..Jenlas MOPAs (?) (or perhaps Coherent's in later iterations..)

..here's some vid that shows more close-ups of the 'rig'.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiRhejN_dAk

..Later-on, it was done with OPSL-rigs by 'Lightwave' (story, here: http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...ghlight=yvette ) ..but, nowhere near as-low divergence / long-range brightness fidelity as the Ions...

..Would be interesting to confirm if 'your neighbors' were using the Ion / Jenlas rig, or the 'Lightwave' OPSL-one.. If you're saying 'Laserfabrik is confirmed' as the producer, then that would seem to-confirm the '1st-Gen' Ion / Jenlas rig.. which would be kickin..

"We have noticed that a laser-rainbow that has been displayed in the city of Aalen, Germany in June 2012. Kindly note, that the show has been entirely produced by a competitor without any involvement of Laserfabrik team, the artist Yvette Mattern or our equipment at all. The news says the setup is called Global Rainbow, so I guess it is Laserfabrik.

technically it's kind of interesting, but artistically it's a total snoozer.

really.. how long are they going to continue to milk the rainbow cow?

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

I'd have loved some more elaborate beam effects and cloud scanning, but it *is* still damn impressive.
(For the ones who aren't so used to coherent beams in the air at least :P)

I agree that it seems easy to impress "the average joe" with just about any coherent photon-ness.

It would be interesting to see whether these non-laserist folks could discern the difference between something with artistic merit and something that lacks any.

I was only able to look at one picture as internet is not good on the bus - but is that rainbow lacking a few colours?

David, I agree. I want to take my laserings as far into an art forms as is possible. I've got a way to go, seeing what others like Swami and, who does the awesome building size lumia? Anyway, 2 odd years researching laser and watching videos and seeing pictures has given me a good idea of what's possible in artistic terms and it's pretty exciting slowly learning the skills to pull some off myself.

Seeing Swami win an award this year puts faith in the ILDA. If they can see it and the artists are getting their work out there, then laser art shall improve!
