Maybe a bit of a late reply but...

No jim, you don't have to pay for them.

Usually your ISP will provide access to a news server. If you are running Outlook or Outlook Express you can acces the newsserver through this. The first time you set up a news server feed you will have to download all the available newsgroups (titles only) onto your PC, this takes a few minutes. You then 'subscribe' to any groups that interest you. There is no charge for this service as it's usually part of the fee you pay to your ISP.

i dont think alt.binaries.laserframes is on that newserver yet ...but it will turn up eventually ................. in the meantime .....

In Outlook express do following ..............

    Tools
    >accounts
    > click on NEWS tab

    Then click ADD
    Then NEWS

At this point you will be asked some questions ...
    GENERAL TAB
    Server Box = NTL NEWS
    Name = Jimbo
    Organisation = jimbo Inc
email address = dont use your real address@ anything.com
reply address = dont use your real address@ anything.com

    SERVER TAB
    Server name = news.ntlworld.com
Dont tick server log on box

    Connectio and Advanced tabs HOPEFULLY
will not be needed to adjust.
    .................................................. ...............................

    Close OE and reopen it
Your main page should now have your news server showing under your mailboxes .
Right click it - click neewsgroups or reset list
this should load up about 50,000 - 70,000 NEWSGROUPS
IE/ message boards / forums about every subject you can imagine

MAKE SURE YOU SUBCRIBE TO - alt.lasers
The infamous "SAM" of sams laser faq posts their regulary , its more general related , not laser show specialist in any way but lots of useful info

If you get stuck let me know

    Astro guy .

Sorry you wont be able to subscribe to either Virgin cable or NTL newsservers as they are for people on on those networks ......... whoever is your ISP normally has their own free access to their own newsserver that will automatically only be accessible to the people on that network.

    IE
    NTL - news.ntl.net
    Virgin media - news.virgin.net
    Sky - news.sky.com ?
    at&t - news.att.com ?

and so on ... the only way to find out is to look at your ISP instructions or help files .......................

Now heres the thing . I think at last count there was 164,000 newsgroups ( message boards / forums ) available to newservers , although a lot of them are dormant .
Most ISP wont pay a dedicated memebr of staff to maintain the list, as it requires some monitoring in terms content , general ISP will want "some" restrictions on whats available in terms of content and errr mmmm movies etc although some "pay to use" newservers will specialise in having EVERY newsgroup available.
Anyways most draw their list from "influence" newservers and once alt.binaries.laserframes starts to get on their lists it will start to propogate and become available to all. will likely take months and only then with perservernce of people asking their ISP to add it ! Which takes time ...but if you want to swap frames easily put in the work now it will become self perpetuating like the movie sites ......... "hey someone did me a good turn .. i will help too and load up my latest 2 minute creation" ..........as its a BINARY newsgoup not onyl cn frames be easily uploaded but movies IE / FLEM videos etc etc , word docuemtns anything can go easily on the the newsgroup by simply adding it to your email ( like an attachment ) and clicking send

Dont do that at alt.lasers though ... your head will get jumped all over !! as its NOT a Binary newsgroup

Jim you done your first posting yet ? if not subscribe to alt.test and post "anything" there to check all your setting are correct and signature is set etc

Just a quick word of warning , Robots scour newsgroups for email addresses to make available to spammers so always make sure your not revealing your REAL email address in your settings ........unless you dont mind spam of course .

    No, unfortunately.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like a good old fashioned alt.binaries takeover is in order...

So how can I access the binaries if NTL/Virgin wont support access to them?

Unfortunately the only option you have is to pay for a newsgroup service that carries alt.bin

There are no known free ones, they are usually "abused into oblivion".

Give me about 15 minutes to setup a Laserframes section here at PL.
