Default Electronics Question - (not lasers)

don't ask me why etc... its not important

I need to extend the range on this Motorola mbp36 camera

from googling I believe its uses 2.4GHz signal

here are a few shots of the inside and the transmitter unit

    transmitter

now would extending the aerial help with extending the range?

    Hey Andy

The best thing you could do would be to replace the antenna with a higher gain one, by the looks of it (and it's a guess) the one incorporated into the unit looks to be something like 2dBi

So replacing it with a 4dBi omni or better still a directional patch antenna would increase the range (the directional patch would have the limitation that it must be pointing in the direction of the AP but would certainly increase the distance)

Be cautious though as doing this would void any RF approvals

The easiest thing to do would be to get a pigtail with a SMA connector crimped on one end and solder it in place of the existing antenna co-ax, then just use an antenna with SMA connectors

    12dbi
    14dbi directional antenna
It would be nice to replace base station antenna also

Cool thanks so could I add say 5 metres of cable then a new aerial?

Then I can relocate the aerial in the loft

You can can buy antenna with cable, but long cable gives big losses at this frequencies. Bad antenna with a short cable will give better results than a good antenna with long cable. Need take this into account.
